LA Expert Airs Problem: Tel Aviv PollutioO No Joke TEL AVIV (ZINS) — The pro- blem of air pollution, a leading issue in America, has become a serious one for Israel. Robert Chess, a Los Angeles specialist who conducted a survey in Israel, found that The con- tamination of the atmosphere from automobile exhaust in Tel Aviv is even more pronounced than in Los Angeles. Chass underlined that the situa- tion is worsening from day to day and that if the present trend con- tinues, and if the number of autos in use increases at the present rate, Tel Avivians will ultimately be _compelled to flee the city. _ There are 250,000 cars on Is- rael's highways, and the number is increasing. At the present rate, there will be almost 1,000,000 auto- mobiles in use by 1985. Tel Aviv' alone has 170,000 vehicles. Lot G NORTHLAND Lot . 14 EASTLAND tfiecrAl 413421, FM. SAT. SUN. MON. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, Forestry 12, 1971-3 Shah of Iran Shuns Anti-Israel Thesis in Talks With Western Oil Companies JERUSALEM (ZINS)—Political circles in Israel are calling atten- tion to the recent negotiations between the world's oil-producing countries and the oil companies. Despite tensions that often threatened to disrupt the talks, there was no reference to the old, anti-Zionist and anti-Israel thesis that Western friendship for Israel could lead to retaliation and the cutting off of oil supplies. For many decades, and even preceding the establishment of the state of Israel, this recurring threat was repeated by world poli- ticians as a vital factor in foreign policy and so recorded in the archives of the U.S. State Depart- ment and the British Foreign Of- fice. Any support for the Zionist cause, it was argued, would result.. in the Arabs cutting off the oil supply. President Truman charac- terized it as a heavy propaganda club employed against the state of Israel. At the latest oil conference, this point was not even mentioned. The Shah of Iran, regarded as friendly to Israel, made it emphatically clear that the only real issue be- tween the parties was ensuring a better share of the oil profits to the producing countries. Even the representatives of Arab countries, such as Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, made no attempt to raise the antizIsrael argument.
