Dr. Goldwin Smith Named
Franklin Lecturer of 1971
The 21st annual Leo M. Frank-
lin memorial lecture series in
human relations opens 8 p.m.
March 3 in Wayne State Univer-
sity's Upper DeRoy Auditorium.
The theme will be "The Professor
and the Public: The Role of the
Scholar in the Modern World."
The series is named for the late
rabbi of Temple Beth El who pio-
neered in the field of improved
relations among people of diverse
creeds and races.

The engaged couple was gradu-
ated from Wayne State University.
Mr. Krause is a graduate student
at the University of Detroit.

Each year a member of the
WSU faculty who has made a spe-
cial contribution in the field of
human relations is named the
Franklin Lecturer. For 1971, it is
Dr. Goldwin Smith, professor of
history.
Professor A. L. Rowse of Oxford
University, will open the series
with a lecture on "The Scholar and
Responsibility to the Public." Dr.
Rowse is an authority on the age
of Elizabteh I.
He has published about 30
books of history and poetry, in-
cluding major biographies of
Shakespeare, Marlow and Sir
Walter Raleigh. "A Cornish
Childhood," The England of
Elizabeth," "The Early Church -
ills," and "The English Spirit"
are among his publications.
Dr. J. IL Heater, professor of
history at Yale University, will
present the second lecture 8 p.m.
May 5 at WSU. His topic is "The
Historian and His Society: A
Sociological Analysis." He has
been honored as a Guggenheim
Fellow, a Fullbright Fellow, and
a Fellow of the Ford Foundation
and spoke at the International
Congress of Historians at Moscow,
1970.
Professor Hester is the author
of "The Reign of King Pym,"
"More's Utopia," "The Biography
of an Idea," and "Reappraisals in
History."
Dr. Smith will present the final
lecture, "The Gates of Excel-
lence," 8 p.m. May 12 at WSU.
He is a Fellow of the Royal His-
torical Society, and the Guggen-
heim and Ford Foundations.
His publications include "The
Treaty of Washington," "A History
of England," "A Legal and Con-
stitutional History of England,"
and "The Heritage of Man."
Dr. Smith received his PhD from
Cornell University. He was the
recipient of an honorary doctor of
letters degree from the University
of Western Ontario in 1963.
In addition to teaching, he
serves as an advisory editor for
Charles Scribner's Sons and has
served as a consultant to Ford
Foundation.

Brith, annual Israel Bond dinner-
dance, at Cong. Shaarey Zedek, a
total of $152,000 in Israel Bond
sales was announced—a record for
