Leonard F. Chapman Jr. an- nounced Monday in Washington that President Nixon approved the Marine Corps selection board's naming of Brig. General William J. Weinstein to be promoted to the grade of major general, the highest grade that can attained by any U.S. Marine reservist. Gen. Weinstein, 53, is a Detroit attorney, presently serving as as- sistant division commander of the 4th Marine Reserve Division, head- quartered at Camp Pendleton, A native Detroiter, he is the only reservist from Michigan ever to attain the rank of general in the 55-year history of the Marine Corps Reserve. He enlisted in the Marines on July 9, 1941, and was commissioned as second lieutenant Jan. 31, 1942, less than two months after the United States was at- GEN. WILLIAM 3. General Weinstein was named brigadier general on July 1, 1967, and thereafter was assigned to be the first assistant division com- mander of the 4th Marine Reserve Division. He was selected by the Marine Corps commandant Gen. Chapman ta command approximately 6.000 reservists in an amphibious and helicopter exercise at Camp 'Pen- dleton, Calif. in July, 1968. that As a result of the success reserve exercise, the general was selected director of it Marine re- serve exercise, "High Desert," at Camp Pendleton last August that involved 19,000 Marine reservists from almost every state. This exercise, the largest and most ambitious ever conducted by Mar- ine reservists, was described by senior professional Marines and by the Department of Defense obser- vers as "the most successful oper- ation ever conducted by any mili- tary reserve unit of the United States."
