The demand was made at the Iladassah Mid-Winter Conference being held here for the first time in Hadassah history. Addressing the 150 delegates, Mrs. Max Schenk, national presi- dent of Hadassah, declared: "We insist on the rights of Jews every- where to live in freedom. In parti- cular, we think of our brethren in Soviet Russia suffering under a cruel dictatorship." A new community college built by Hadassah in Israel was offici- ally opened here Monday in the presence of Hadassah national board members by Deputy Minister of Education Asher Yadlin. The community college is in- tended to train technicians and practical engineers who need an education beyond high school lev- el, but do not require a full uni- versity program. The college presently houses four departments: computer tech nology, scientific photography, laboratory technology and medical records librarianship. Two hund- red and fifty students are already reportedly attending the school. Speaking at the opening ses- sion, Mrs. Schenk told the dele- gates: "We derive from Israel much more than we bring to IL Thorugh our efforts for this land and its people we are strength- ened spiritually and morally. "This new role for Hadas- sah is in addition to the ongoing services Hadassah volunteers have provided in its two-year-old 'Ac- tion Program' " Mrs. Cohen de- clared. American affairs chairmen of Hadassah chapters will be asked to contact job corps directors and offer to supply specific services to them such as recreation, tutor- ing and trips. The Hadassah leaders adopted two resolutions. One called upon Congress to restore the cuts made in the national medical research budget, and the other asked for the reform of the welfare system. The 500 delegates called JDL activities "irresponsible" and harmful to the cause of Soviet Jewry because they diverted public attention, con- fused opinion and embarrassed the U.S. government. The resolution charged that such JDL activities "play directly into the hands of the Soviet government which exploits the outrageous acts of a small number of Jews by suggesting that harassing indivi- duals and vandalizing property are the tactics employed by organized Zionism and Jewish groups." The resolution dedicated Hadas- sah "to persevere in efforts to create a climate of national and international opinion that will in- fluence" Soviet authorities to al_ low Russian Jews "to live as Jews at home or emigrate and live as Jews in Israel." It urged the Sov- iet government to allow Jews who. wish to leave for Israel to do so, to grant to its Jewish nationals "the right to teach, practice, pre- serve and perpetuate their reli- gion and culture," and "to halt the vicious anti-Jewish, anti-Zionist campaign being waged in the Sov- iet press, on TV and radio."
