Let Youth Take French,
Montreal Jews Asked
MONTREAL (JTA)-Jewish par-
ents in a Montreal suburb have
been invited to send their children
to the suburb's high school to learn
French in an experiment which an
official of a synpgogue in the
suburb declared "may well herald
a new approach to the painful
problem of bilingualism and bicul-
turalism" in the Quebec province.
Primary and secondary schools
in Quebec are under Christian de-
nominational sponsorship, and Jew-
ish children either attend such
schools or go to Jewish day schools.
The issue of bilingualisni is a
major factor in current conflicts
between English-speaking and
French-speaking Canadians. Eng-
lish is the first language in the
schools in Quebec province.
The hnitathia was extended to
a group of Jewish parents at the
Teems Israel of Cheasedy syna-
gogue by Made Duckett, a
messier of the Maisessezeve re-
&sal school COMIIIIIIISADA which
asis-ates Freach-lammiage schools
in the Laval suburb.
Under the plan, there will be a
special program in Judaic studies
in such schools in Hebrew, offi-
cials said. The commissioner told
the parents that "French will be
the future of Quebec and we want
your children to be able to fully
