NY Criminal Court
Reschedules 'Trial
of Columbia Rabbi
NEW YORK (JTA)—The trial
of three members of the Radical
Jewish Union of Columbia Uni-
versity on charges of disrupting a
religious service at Temple Emanu
El here has been rescheduled for
April 13 in New York City Criminal
Court.
The defendants are Rabbi A.
Bruce Goldmann, rabbinical ad-
viser to the RJU, Victor Levin,
a graduate student at Columbia
University, and Anne Rosen, a
graduate fellow at New York- Uni-
versity.The charges grew out of
demonstrations by the RJU at
Temple Eminu El on May 15 and
May 29. A hearing was held on
the charges before Judge Morris
Schwab in City Criminal Court on
Jan. 12, at which a postponment
was requested because the attorney
for the defendants, Gerald Lef-
court, is now representing 12 Black
Panthers being tried here on con-
spiracy charges.
Rabbi Goldinan ,has been charg-
ed on two counts, and the grad-
uate students on one count each.
Rabbi Goldman said a legal de-
fense committee has raised about
$500 toward the estimated trial
costs of $5,000. He said that at
the April 13 trial, a request will
be made that the hearings be
transferred to a Beth Din, a
rabbinical court.

Sen. Henry Jackson Critical of Failure
to Grant Israel Aid She Requested
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Sen. Hen-
ry M. Jackson (D., Wash.) said he
"was dismayed by the failure of
the administration's new budget to
use the broad authority to extend
military credits to Israel that was
overwhelmingly voted by the last
- Congress."
"I am very concerned;" Sen.
Jackson said, "that the amount of
support requested in the admin-
istration's new budget is inade-
quate, the credit terms are pro-
hibitive and the sense of urgency
has been lost. This is a critical
moment in the Middle East, which
has become the cockpit of the cold
war.
"Rather than use the existing
broad and decisive authority grant-
ed last year in Section- 501 of the
Defense Procurement Act," the
senator said, "the administration
has chosen to treat Israel's press-
ing military requirements in the
Hebrew Loan Association
Reports Record Support
SAN FRANCISCO (JTA)— The
economic slump has brought many
more requests for loans from the
Hebrew Free Loan Association,
resulting in total loans outstanding
at the end of 1970 of nearly $300,000,
a record in the history of the 73-
year-old agency, according to Dr.
Abraham Bernstein, president.
He said the agency had record-
ed "spectacular" increases in its
student loan program with a rec-
ord number of 103 students receiv-
ing loan aid amounting - to $58,000
during 1970. He said this was
greater than the total amount of
loans to students during the first
four years of the program.
Israel Discount Baik
Net Income Rises 12 Pct.
NEW - YORK — Israel Discount
Bank Limited reported 1970 net
income of $3,943,973, or $1.13 per
share, a rise of 12 -per cent from
the $3,522,684 or $1.01 per share,
earned in 1969. A cash dividend of
$.40 per ordinary share was paid
on Jan. 12.
During 1970, total assets of Israel
Discount Bank passed _the billion
dollar mark and at year end
amounted to $1,312,565,825, up 34
per cent from $1125,562,810 at. year

routine manner of the Foreign
Military Sales Act.
"The measure passed last
year," Jackson said, "carried a
strong and decisive policy state-
ment aimed directly at. Moscow
that won the, appr6val of. 87
senators. Now the administra-
tions has decided gratuitously to
request authority it already has,
but without the sense of urgency
the Congress took pains to em-
phasize last year and which Is
as necessary as ever.
"This action," according to Sen.
Jackson, "may be interpreted in
Moscow as an indication of inde-
cision and ambivalence at pre-
cisely the time when firmness and
resolve are needed."
Jackson, author of a measure
approved by the last Congress
under which $500,000,000 in military
credits for Israel was authorized,
pointed out that under the authority
of Section 501, the available terms
are appropriate to Israel's situa-
tion while the authority requested
in the - new
is "wholly
inadequate, both as to amount and
terms."
Sen. Jackson reiterated the me;
ommendation from his recently
released report to the. armed serv-
ices committee that "we 'should
faithfully implement the basic
policy expressed in section 501 of
the Defense Procurement Act of
1971—which is now the law of the
land—to furnish , to Israel the
means of providing for its own
security, in order to restore and
maintain the military balance in
the Middle East."
