TEL AVIV—For_ _three and a
half years, Israel adopted a
liberal policy toward the 360,000
Arabs living in , the Gaza Strip,
including 220,000 refugees in
nine ca m p s. Now the Israeli
authorities have decided to alter
their policy in answer to the daily
attacks and-murderoui acts in the
area.
Dozens of Arabs were the vic-
tims of these attacks and terrorists
carry out executions of Arabs who
are . accused of not co-operating
with the terrorists.
The tragic case of the Aroya
family, who visited Gaza with their
two children has stirred public
opinion in Israel to the utmost. A
hand grenade was thrown at the
car in which the family traveled
through the town. The two small
children were killed and Mrs.
Aroya was severely injured.
When the grieving father and
husband appealed to the local
police In Gaza for help and
asked where the nearest hos-
pital is, the policemen refused
to help him.
Thus tragedy struck a family of

olim from England.
Aroya found a good job in ad-
vertising. He decided to pass-
through Gaza, although there are
warning signs in Hebrew, Arabic
and English, to refrain from enter-
ing the city. He thought nothing
would happen.
The children were buried on the
Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.
Aroya said he wished to put up a
little monument in Gaza on the
spot where his children were
killed, to remind the Arabs what
had been done to his children. "I
do not hate the Arabs for what
they did to me," he added.

As an answer to the growing
terror-wave in the Gaza Strip, the
Israeli authorities have deposed
Mayor Rayib El Alomi of Gaza,
who had been nominated by the
Egyptians, and who had refused
for more than 31/2 years to co-
operate with the Israeli military
authorities in their fight against
terrorists. He didn't cooperate in
matters of development. Of-- nine
members of the Town Council, who
had been nominated'by the Egyp-
tians, only five remained.
The Israeli authorities have de-
cided to adopt stern measures
against the terrorists. They im-
posed a strict curfew and started
a thorough search in the refugee
camps, where they have found
large quantities of hidden arms.
Several terrorists were killed in
armed clashes.

The military control of the zone
was tightened and for the first
time units of the border police
entered the area, in order to sup-

The former commander of the

opinion about the situation in Gaza.
During the Six-Day War, he con-
ducted military operations in the
Gaza Strip and Sinai. He said that
the liberal policy adopted by the
Israeli authorities strengthened the
terrorists in the zone.
"Israel should have adopted
from the beginning a more severe
policy," he believes. "The Israeli
security forces should occupy the
refugee camps and remove all
dangerous elements, who terrorize
the Arab population. This popula-
tion must be convinced that the
Israeli security forces will protect
them and deal with all necessary
severity and force with the ter-
rorists. The movements of refugees

JERUSALEM — A study to de-
termine whether the four basic
taste stimuli—sweet, salty, soar
facial expressions is being carried
and bitter — cause fixed inborn
out at the Hebrew University-
Hadassah school of dental medi-
cine, founded by the Alpha Omega
fraternity.
Heading the study is Budapest-
born Dr. Jacob E. Steiner, 43, in
charge of the oral physiology
laboratory, who is working, on the
hypothesis that at least two well-
built reactions exist: one of ac-
ceptance and the other of rejec-
tion.
_

He feels these two types of
gross reaction may be divided
into a more characterized reac-
tion to sweet stimuli, a slight
acceptance of moderately salty
stimuli and a clear rejection of
sour and bitter stimuli. How-
ever, from preliminary experi-
ments, it appears that different
muscles are Involved in reaction
to sour and bitter stimuli.

To avoid the influence of con-
scious awareness of learning, con-
ditioning and other mental proc-
esses in the formation of these
facial expressions, Dr. Steiner has
based the study on new-born
babies, less than one week old.

Drops of taste solutions are ap-
plied on the tongue and facial ex-
pressions are recorded on video
tape together with vocal responses.
Other reactions such as head or
hand movements are also noted.

Jewish Agency to Conduct
Workshop for Educators

NEW YORK — About 30 direc-
tors of bureaus and commissions
of Jewish education throughout
the United States are expected to
attend a workshop in 'Jerusalem
Aug. 2-15, it was announced by Dr.
Abraham P. Gannes, director of
the education and culture depart-
ment of the Jewish Agency for
Israel—American Section.
The American committee ar-
ranging for the workshop includes
Dr. Albert Elazor of Detroit.
The project will be jointly spon-
sored by the American Association
for Jewish Education and the de-
partment of education and culture
of the Jewish Agency—American
Section. It will be conducted in
Israel under the direction of Hay-

his brother-in-law, Minister of De-
fense Moshe Dayan, and accused
him of fearing the Russians in

Egypt. He told the correspopdents
that there are 18-20,000 Russians
in Egypt and in case of renewal
of fighting between the Arabs and
Israel, the Russians have not

enough military power in Egypt
to intervene actively in the war.
He thinks. that the Russian Navy
in the Mediterranean is like the air

and ground forces—unable to in-
tervene.
Weizmann also said that one of

our greatest mistakes was the
stopping of air bombardments in
the heart - of Egypt (before the
cease-fire agreement came into
force). He also attacked the break-
ingoff of contacts between the Is-
raeli Air Force and Russian pilots
over Egypt. This could have con-
vinced the Russians that the Is-
raeli pilots have become afraid
of them.

war.
The Maki leader, Dr. Moshe
Sneh, criticized Weizmann's state-
ment in Davar. If we would, as
Weizmann demands, "have conti-
nued to bomb the heart of Egypt
and the SAM rockets and the air-
fights with Russian pilots would
have continued, what could the
position have been today?" Dr.
Sneh asked, "What would the
Egyptians and Russians have
done? Who is so naive as to ima-
gine that the Russians would have
swallowed such further defeats
and accepted our terms for
peace?"
Menahem Begin does not seem
to be too happy about Weizmann's
speeches. But Begin is cautious
and tactful not to intervene and
try to teach Weizmann- a lesson
in Politics, because such steps
would be interpreted that Begin
is jealous of Weizmann's popular-
