Expect Gibraltar to Lose
2 Thirds of Jews to Aliya

TEL AVIV (JTA)—About two-
thirds of Gibraltar's Jewish com-
munity of 600, all young people,
are expected to emigrate to Is-
rael within the next few years,
it was reported here by a young
Jewish couple who just arrived
from the British crown colony.
According to David and Esther
Hassan, deterioration of business
since the Spanish border was
closed seven years ago is the
main reason why the Jews want
to leave. -
Most of Gibraltar's Jewish conf-
munity run small businesses. The
Ha ssa ns, whose families have
lived on the "Rock" for genera-
tions, ran a men's apparel shop
and a boutique.
They said that Gibraltar Jews
are well organized and have be-
come Zionist-minded in recent,
years. They see emigration to:
Israel as the only way out: of. their
difficulties, the Hassans said.
