Ex-Nazi Victims
Seek Compensation
for Forced Labor
a
TEL AVIV (JTA)—A delegation
representing the Israeli organiza-
tion of former Nazi victims was
scheduled to go to West Germany
this week to seek compensation for
forced labor they performed. in
German factories during World
War II.
A spokesman for the group said
only about 200,000 of the 2,000,000
Jewish slave laborers have re-
ceived any compensations so far.
He said this was because agree-,
ments were reached with only,five
major German companies, among
them Krupp, Siemens and Tele-
funken, which together paid out
only 50,000,000 marks. Up to now,
no other German company that
employed slave labor during the
war has paid anything, they said.
The delegation was to contact
the West German Manufacturers
Association and the other major
firms in an effort to obtain pay-
ment.
Meanwhile, Trivia Friedman,
bead of the Nazi war crimes
documentation center in Haifa,
posted a $50,000 reward for any-
one who arrests Joseph Men-
gele, the Auschwitz death camp -
doctor..Mengele avoided capture
after World War II and was last
reported to be hiding out in
Paraguay. Friedman said the
reward was for arresting Men-
gele, not for his head. "We want
him to stand trial in Israel or
in West Germany," he said.
Friedman said his center had
collected "thousands and thousands
of documents" against Mengele,
and was preparing a dosier for
his trial
S. African Schools
Introduce Scripture—
Problem for Jews
JOHANNESBURG (JTA) --
Jewish parents in Cape Province
have been advised by community
leaders to invoke their rights to
request that their children be ex-‘11
cused from Scripture lessons in
the state schools which have just
been revised by official edict so as
to implant Christian doctrinal
teachings.
Scripture lessons have always
been part of the state school cur-
riculum but in the past have cov-
ered the Old and New Testaments
in a broad and general way.
A new regulation gazetted in
Cape Province provides that the
lessons shall henceforth be "Chris-
tcheentric" in order to "prepare
the pupils . . to accept Jesus
Christ as his personal saviour."
A deputation of the South Afri-
can Jewish Board of Deputies,
headed by Sydney Walt, brought
the matter to the attention of S.
Theron, director of education of
the Cape Province.
They pointed out that the new
approach to religious instruction
"presents a serious problem in
regard to Jewish children being
exposed to such instruction."
They_noted that "teaching of
this nature, however satisfactory
from • Cluistiaa point of view,
could Rat be acceptable to an
adherent of Judaism. The Jew-
ish Telegraphic Agency learned
that the deputatka was receiv-
ed sympathetically.
The board said it , felt it was its
duty to inform Jewish parents of
the new syllabus and advise them
to invoke their legal right to re-
c quest . that their children be ex-
cused.
Theron said he saw no objec-
tion to the board acting accord-
ingly. The South African Jewish
community newspaper, applauded
the board's initiative.
The paper said editorially, "It
follows that no Jew who respects
his history and faith can allow his
children to be placed in the new
situation".. (which) ... "at best
must confus
e their young minds
and at a worst erode their Judaism.
