Before delivering the traditional Sabbath prayer for the welfare of the country, Rabbi Ernst Conrad of Temple Kol Ami related his own concern to his congregants. Rabbi H. Philip Berkowitz, whc wrote Mr. Nixon on earlier occa- sions, protesting against the de- livery of major Presidential speeches on the Jewish Sabbath, again addressed a letter to the President last Friday. Rabbi Berkowitz commented: "On May 4, 1970 I wrote to you about a matter which I con- sidered to be a most serious one, and for that matter I still deem quite Important. After a consider. able period of time, I did receive what I assume is a standard signatureless card from the White House, acknowledging my letter and making not even the feeblest attempt to explain the situation, and the reasons why you chose Friday evening to address our nation. "Now, you have chosen to pre sent your annual State of the Union Message on the Sabbath. As you can, guess, I am as adamant now as I was on May 4 of last year. Among the many tasks facing you, is that great challenge of unifying a nation that has been plagued by a plethora of problems. Here we stand at the eve of the Sabbath, and on the eve of your annual State of the Union Address. As I see all the facts, I am distressed that you failed to respond to a legitimate problem. One that in reality is easier to solve than so many others confronting you. "I regret having to decide be- tween which is more important, the observance of the Sabbath, or the annual State of the Union Address. However, having been put in that position, I have to make such a decision, and will not, much to my great regret, be able to hear your words."
