Jews, Poles Discuss Divisions, Ways to Unite Efforts at Chicago Meeting CHICAGO (JTA) — Jews and Poles here recently buried a hatchet sharpened 800 years ago when Poland invited oppressed Bellow's 'Sammler' Out as Paperback "Ah, the synagogue. Well, you see, Elya, I didn't have much to do with the synagogue. We were almost freethinkers. Especially my mother. She had a Polish edu- cation. She gave me an emanci- pated name: Arthur." It is Artur Sammler speaking and it is one of the variety of atti- tudes, among the many revealing factors in the life of the hero in "Mr. Sammler's Planet," the best- selling novel by Saul Bellow. An entire world panorama is un- folded in this story that stayed on the best seller list for a very long time and is now destined for an- other long run among best sellers in the paperback field. Fawcett World Library reissued it as a paperback. This is one of Bellow's great triumphs. It is a novel that deals with the world shaking events of the crucial per- iod in European history, the Middle East references, the Polish trag- edy. It is a universal theme, and: the streets of New York on which Sammler walks, reflect another set of attiudes, fearlessness and crui- osity. There is a merger of feel- ire:, a combination of sentiments, a mixture of the comic and the sad. It is the superb that makes Bellow's works so great and that has made the Sammler story among his best. —P.S. Aliya VIP Fears `Volcanic Scene for Latin Jews' LONDON (JTA) — Yosef Leib Klarman, head of the Jewish Agency's Youth Aliya department, said "Latin America is no more a stable continent as far as its Jews are concerned." Addressing the annual general meeting of the Children and Youth Aliya Committee for Great Britain, the Israeli publicist said "Jews there sit on a volcano. Chilean Jews have lost their social role and their economic standing" since the recent election of Marxist President Salvador Allende. In Argentina, Warman said, many Jews live in extreme pov- erty; in Uruguay and Brazil, Jews see no future for their off- spring. From Russia or from Arab states, from the West or the Americas, we are trying to brine them up as well-adjusted, useful men and women," Klarman said. '71 Saw Israel Pound Devalued 15 Per Cent JERUSALEM (Z1NS) —Hebrew University Economics Professor Dan Patenkin, interviewed on tele- vision. stated that the proposed state budget for 1971 is highly in- flationary, and it is doubtful wheth- er it can be balanced. In this connection, Patenkin no- ted that in 1970 Israel's currency was effectively devalued by ap- proximately 15 per cent, making the- actual rate of exchange be- tween the Israel pound and the American dollar approximately 5 to 1. The effective rate for exports from Israel was U.S. $1.00 equals 4.80 pounds, while for imports it was U.S. $1.00 equals 4.80 pounds. Prof. Patenkin believes that Is- rael ought to declare an official devaluation of the Israel currency, establishing a rate of 5 pounds to the dollar. According to the min- istri .of finance, Israel increased its exports during 1970 by 7 per cent. The value of exports in 1970 was $781.000,000 as against $730,000,- 000 in"1969. He acknowledged that "some tenacious and real differ- ences do exist," of an historical and religions nature. One has been the casting of Jews in the role of Christ-killers. The problem was eased consider- ably by the Vatican II statement on the Jews which absolved Jewry of deicide. Lichten rejected the widely held blue-collar stereotype of Polish Americans..11e said that the events of World *War U and varying claims of Jews and Poles about the Polish people's role in the Nazi slaughter had engendered M feel- ings.
