Einstein Dinner-Dance to Aid Bonds

It is a melancholy truth that

Instead of the thorn shall come

even great men have their poor up the fir tree, and instead of the

relations.
brier shall come up the myrtle
—Charles Dickens (1812-1870) tree.
—Isaiah 55:13

Dennison found a flourishing cul-
tural life, virtual communities of
painters Whose art had developed
"from the ground floor" into some
thing bright and refreshing, despite
a scarcity of materials.
What shocked Dennison was
the realization that there are no
print makers nor any print mak-
ing facilities in all of Israel. This
serious lack was described to
him by Elisheva Cohen, curator
of the Israel Museum, and by
Don Hoffner, director of the
Berate' art academy.
"Based on this," said Dennison,
"the American Gallery committed
itself to return and open the first
atelie.7 for print making in Israel."
One of the artists represented by
the American Gallery, Dr. Emil
Weddige, head of the graphics de-
partment at the University of
Michigan, will take a sabbatical
starting in June and become mas-
ter print maker in Israel, respon-
sible for the training of Israelis
in the art of print making. Dr.
Weddige is of international stat-
ure, having written an important
text on the art of lithography.
The former head of print making
at Cranbrook, Lawrence Barker,
will lay the grcundwork for a work-
shop opening in Jerusalem next
month. Barker, a vice president of
American Gallery, has been prom-
ised the assistance of the muni-
cipality of Jerusalem by Jerusalem
Mayor Teddy Kollek.
Among the Michigan artists rep-
resented by American Gallery Arts
is Max Shaye, who is chairing the
Jan. 30 art event for Shaarey
Zedek.
Billed as a "spindle art auc-
