The Best of
Everything
By DANNY RASKIN
PEOPLE FROM ALL walks of
life enjoy Hugo's at the Park Shel-
ton on Woodward and Kirby, and
it isn't uncommon to see a sports
or shots biz celebrity or daily life
personality enjoying the excellent
French-Italian cuisine and superior
service . . . As Detroit's celebrity
site, Hugo's is gaining interna-
tional fame . . . The food has al-
ready received ultra-superb raves
from people all over .. . Now folks
from other countries, scientists,
sportsters, diplomats, etc., enjoy
the wonderful food and service and
leave beaming with satisfaction.
TONY NESTICO of the Bla,k
Forest Inn on S. Washington and
11 Mile in Royal Oak, tells of the
two kids coming downstairs with-
out a stitch of clothes on .. The
mother dropped her cards on the
table and screamed, "What do you
mean by coming downstairs un-
dressed?" . . ..- "See, smarty," said
one kid to the other, "I told you
mom's vanishing cream wouldn't
work."
IN LEHIGH, NEBRASKA, it's
against the law to sell doughnut
holes!
JIMMY COHN, pianist, does a
good job with his trio at the Top of
The Flame.
SAMMY LIEBERMAN of Ral-
eigh House, is a native-born
Israeli, coming to America as a
5-year-old in 1910 ... His father,
Azrael, opened the only kosher
restaurant and- catering hall in
Chicago at.the time.
THERE IS NO such thing as
kosher-style!'
SIR RICHARD'S Delicatessen-
Restaurant in the Crestwood Mo-
tel, is a community "sleeper" ...
The' food is good and the prices
unbeatable.
DETROIT'S FIRST Japanese
restaurant is in the Belcrest Hotel.
"BAG IT" at the Hotel Pontchar-
train is in the Encore Cafe Theater
and creating a mild sensation with
its satirical comedy sequences ..
Its compatriot at the Zodiac Thea-
ter on Northwestern and 12 Mile is
still packing them in for "Bald,"
a musical comedy revue which is
a superior degree of professional
entertainment .. The music and
lyrics by Mort Zieve and Rudy
Simons are superb, and the cast
does them just credit.
WALTER SHAMIE, Detroit may-
oral candidate in the last couple of
elections, has taken over the old
Vannelli's restaurant on Wood-
ward.
THE CORKS OF bottles of red
still wine should be drawn half an
hour before the wine is to he
served and the lips of the bottle
carefully wiped . . . This allows
the wine to breathe while the air
brings out all the imprisoned
bouquet
PET PEEVES . . . "Push 'em"
waitresses at cocktail lounges who
ask if you're ready for another
drink shortly after serving the first
one! . .. Owners "too cheap" or
too oblivious to buy their good cus-
tomers a drink once in a while.
CHALK UP ONE for Pete De-
Fiore, bossman at Hugo's in the
Park Shelton ...Last week, a lo-
cal columnist came into his popu-
lar dining spot and called him over
to the table ... After raving about
a certain dish he was hiving, the
writer asked for the recipe . .
Pete just smiled and said, "Sorry,
but we have the same policy as
you journalists. We never reveal
our sauce."
What grace Is to the body, good
sense is to the mind.
