Pereit Urges Joint Effort -
to Assure Israel Defense

(Continued frost Page 1)
Peres said, and declared that "You
and we, Israel and American Jews,
must act to assure Israel's suc-
cessful defense." He expressed
confidence that in another con-
frontation Israel again would be
the victor.
Declaring that Israel and her
friends are deterMined not to have
American manpower join in any
form of warfare, Peres refuted the
accusations of those who make
such charges of Israeli expecta-
tions.
He pointed to many economic
successes in Israel, but he indi-
cated that the new demands for
the country's security resulted in
heaviest taxation; that there are
great burdens, with $5,000,000 a
day needed for the armed forces
and $1,000,000 to provide for new
immigrants.
He viewed as encouraging the
entrance of 1911,660 new settlers
—mostly young with university
diplomas—who have come to Is-
rael since the 1967 war. He also
expressed belief In the develop-
ment of a strong Arab-Jewish

friendship in Israel, stating:
"Perhaps peace - will bees not
on the Suez but around Jeru-
salem between Israelis and their -
Arab neighbors?'
Peres read a message ;sent
through him to the' gathering "liy
Edward Levy Sr. who welComed
his Israeli friend to Detroit and
submitted a $150,000 pledge to the
drive through him.
Many of the announced pledges
represented double giving request-
ed in the current national cam-
paign for S400,000,000-
Addressing the meeting, Alan
Schwartz, president of the Jewish
Welfare Federation, read the text
of a telegram that was sent over
his and Judge Lawrence's Gubow's
signatures, in behalf of Federation
and the Jewish Community Coun-
cil, affirming the right of Jews to
ask for justice for Russian Jewry
and c o n d -e mning terrorism.
Schwartz stated that the Jewish
community's repudiation of van-
dalism and terror is expressed in
the action taken in the communi-
cation with the President.

`Ethnically Conscious Students
Outnumber Alienated Radicals'

WASHINGTON (JTA)—A Mud
Brith Hillel Foundation's study on
Jewish campus activists reports
-that students who define them-
selves as "radical Jews"—youths
who though anti-establishment re-
main "ethnically conscious and
committed" — "far outnumber"
Jewish radicals who disavow any
ties or loyalties to traditional
Jewish causes.
And while this newly-emerged
breed firmly aligns itself on the
political left, it strongly opposes
the anti-Israel and frequently anti-
Jewish postures of far left and
"third world' movements.
The study, prepared by Rabbi
Oscar Groner, Hillel Foundation's
assistant national director, was
presented to Bnai Brith's Board
of Governors, the organization's
highest public body, at its annual
meeting here.
It stated that young "radical

•Jews" and their activism — pro-
test demosstradons In support
of Israel and Soviet Jewry and
demands for Jewish studies
programs In college curricula
— are a minority among Ameri-
can and Canadian Jewish col-
lege students, but added:
"They more and more reflect
the sentiments and new conscious-
ness of many of their non-marching
and non-protesting Jewish peers.
The study said that while a small
but vocal group of alienated Jew-
ish radicals "judge and condemn
Jewish values in terms of far left
philosophies," those who are radi-
cal about their Jewishness "judge
the nolitical left in terms of its
stands on Jewish issues."
This positive-minded element is
impatient with what it regards
as "go-slow" tactics of established
Jewish organizations and institu-
tions, the study said, and has set
up a structure of small, varied but
interacting youth . groups on and
off campus. But instead of remain-
