Jewisniqffluseu m Alters Program;
Karl Katz Resigns as Director

NEW YORK — Major changes
in the program and objectives of
the Jewish Museum have been an-
nounced by David Finn, chairman
of the museum's board of gover-
nors: The broad-based program of
contemporary- changing exhibitions
will be• discontinued, with future
emphasis on shows "related to the
museum's commitment to 'the Jew.
ish comunity." •
In line with the new policy, a
$62,000 giant has been received
from •the New York State Council
on the Arts for a special installa-
tion of the Judaica Collection. Karl
Katz, director of the museum since
1968, will resign'. Feb. 2.
"Under. the new plans for the
Jewish- •Museum." Katz wrote in
a letter to of Louis Finkelstein,
chancellor of the Jewish Theologi-
cal Seminary, sponsoring•organiza-
tion of _the .museum: "I feel that
my task at the museum will not be
varied .or challenging enough for
me to continue. I therefore would
like to render my resignation as of
Feb. 2, 1971. The W. Eugene Smith
show' at the museum between then
and April .is my reason for selec-
ting that date.
"This important exhibition
symbolizes for Me the kind of !
art/concern/creative posture the
museum has manifested these
last_ seven years, and I know it
will be not only the finale of an
important period in the mus-
eum's history, but also the be-
ginning of a program that will
reflect the humane values that
Gene. Smith's photographs re-
veal," said Katz.
According to a statement from
the museum, "The new direction of
the Jewish Museum results from
the consideration of harsh prob-
lems currently facing many cul-
tural institutions in the city — fin- I
and the definition- of role.
The Jewish Museum has no en-
dowment, and its sponsoring or-
ganization, the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America, was able to
provide, for only a part of the oper-

ating budget. Contributions from
traditional sources and special
grants from business and individ-
uals have not been sufficient to
prevent deficits."
It is also felt that museological
emphases have altered.
"When the Jewish Museum be-
gan its policy of showing avant
garde exhibitions," K atz.
"there was a need for an adven-
turous place that would fill a void
and could focus on the interaction
of the visitinh public and the work,
sometimes ephemeral, that was
currently being produced. The
museum, with a handsome new
plant, and spared the limitations
and obligations of building, show-
ing, and maintaining a permanent
collection, had walls and floors
that were ideally- suited to the
purpose.
"These shows and other pro-
grams that the museum initiated
have become so widespread that
many involved wiht the Jewish
Museum feel more so than I —
that it can now play a more mean-
ingful role in the unique area for
which it was originally established.
In that more specialized area, it
can doubtless be a pace-setter as
well. Increasingly, there is a need
for ethnic show cases. This could
he a great one."

PHILADELPHIA (JTA) — The
National Institute of Mental Health
has granted $285,000 to the Phila-
delphia Geriatric Center to con-
tinue a program of research into
senility, it was announced by
Harry A. Robinson, president of
the Geriatric Center, a constituent
of the Federation of Jewish Agen
des-United Fund. The grant will
help support a study of 60 sur
vivors of a group of 80 aged
woman residents of the center to
determine what continuing im-
provement remains from treatment
