JFCS Volunteers to Hear Dr. Bruce Danto

Address Its Annual Training Institute

Herbert Siliman, president of the
Jewish Family and Children's
Service, and Mrs. Joseph H. tac-
kier, chairman of the JFCS volun-
teer service committee, have ask-
ed psychiatrist Dr. Bruce Dante,
director of Detroit's Suicide Pre-
vention Clinic, to address the third
annual "Volunteer Institute," 9:30
a.m. Wednesday at the Jewish
Center.
The institute is an in-service
training program for volunteers
working in the "Person to Per-
son" program of JFCS and in the
nursing home volunteer project.
The latter was organized 21/2
years ago to reach out to residents
of nursing homes who have little
or no families, and to offer to
them the companionship and con-

cern of an interested "friend."
There are more than 100 women
enrolled in this program, serving
some 300 lonely persons in 13
nursing homes.
The "Person to
Person" program
was orga nized
last spring in rec-
ognition of the
fact that there
are many isolat- 1
ed and lonely in-
dividuals in the
community w h o
need assistance
with shopping, Dr. Dante
trips to doctors and for therapy.
Often a "friend" will come to
spend an afternoon visiting, or will
occasionally call on the telephone
to break the quiet of a lonely day.
Presently, 25 women are engag-
ed in this activity and over the
past eight months have served 50
people. Some are seen on a con-
tinuing basis; others, for a short
period of time to meet a crisis.
The institute serves as an
orientation session for new par-
ticipants. Dr. Danto will discuss
the role of the volunteer when
working with the isolated and
lonely and how one can help
them cope with their fears and
loneliness.
There will be two workshops fol-
lowing Dr. Danto's remarks, one
dealing with the institutional set-
ting, led by Mrs. Zena Baum,
JFCS staff member who organized
the nursing home volunteer pro-
ject. Mrs. Annette Bechek, former
casework consultant to the project,
will lead the workshop relating to
the private setting.
All current volunteer workers
are invited as are women who
want to participate. There is no
charge for this program, which will
begin wit hregistration and a con-
tinental breakfast
