Artist Otto Schneid's 'Ruth' Initiates
New Toronto Publishing Project

NEW YORK (JTA) -- Dr. Sey-
mour P. Lachman, a member Ofj
the New York City Board of Edu-
cation, challenged the American ;
Jewish community to bring back
into the fold some of our "most
outstanding and intellectually
gifted Jewish young people" who
comprise a large percentage of
the radical left.
Addressing the Farhand Char-
ter Da:. Dinner at the Hotel Com-
modore. Dr. Lachman noted that
these young American Jews - com-
plain that our religious and Jew-
ish communal institutions pay lip
service to social justice and shy
away from true commitment. They
claim that these very same insti-
tutions are concerned with triviali-
ties and inanities at the very same
time that America's social fabric
is being ripped apart and our
house is in disarray. They reproach
us for misguided and misdirected
priorities which they claim have
nothing to do with the realities
and needs around us."

original text of the Book of Ruth
in Hebrew, the English transla-

The texts are on one side of the

It is noteworthy that as an in-
troductory note the artist - turned-

and he does it skillfully in explain-

philosophical and dramatic sub-
jects. Source Books soon will pub-
lish his latest work, "The Man-
Made Hell, a Search for Rescue."
It deals with the decay of man
and its emphasis is on survival.
In "Ruth," Schneid's 12 full-

Dr. Lachman-also noted that
the survival of the American
Jewish comunity is at stake
since so many "young Jews are
so actively and completely in-
volved in the counter-culture of
America.'

Refugee Jews Outnumber Native-Born in France

PARIS — There are more Jew-
ish refugees in France than native
Jews. About 100,000 Jews remained
in France after World War II.
A total of 150,000 survivors,
mainly East Europeans, came in
during the DP era, and over
275,000 arrived more recently from
Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and

other North African countries,
raising the total French Jewish
population to about 550,000.

explanatory note thus:
"The emphasis that the most
revered of the nation's kings,
Davi d. the ancestor of the
Messiah. was the great-grandson
of a foreign woman, along with
the inspired description of her
ideal faithfulness, would have
been voiced by a thinker and
narrator representing an opposi-
tion. In a situation of conflict
between national interests and

human values, this great little
book (Bible's "Ruth") meant
decision in favor of the latter."
