Mogen Abraham. The assembly was called by the Council of Orthodox Rabbis of De- troit and was co-sponsored by Agudath Israel, Akiva Hebrew Day School, Beth Yehudah Schools, Re- ligious Zionist Organization and the Metropolitan Council of Young Is- rael. Some 400 persons attended. Main addresses were delivered by Rabbis Leizer Levin of Cong. Beth Tefilo Emanuel Tikva, presi- dent of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis, and Hayim Donin, rabbi of Cong. Bnai David and president of Akiva Day School. They urged unceasing efforts on behalf of Soviet Jewry, which has shown a revival of Jewish consciousness following 50 years of Communist rule and attempts to remove every trace of Jewish cultural and religious life. Avern Cohn, who chaired the gathering, asked that letters be sent to the families of Soviet Jews who have been sentenced to labor camps, to express their solidarity and identification with their plight. Telegrams of protest to So- viet officials here and in Moscow also were urged. Rabbi S. P. Wohlgelernter, rab- bi of Mogen Abraham set the tone for the assembly in his opening remarks. David Schloss, a young student of the Yeshivoth Beth Ye- huda, read a concluding prayer for Soviet Jewry, composed by the venerated scholar, the Hafetz Hay- im, in the early 1900s under con- ditions of Czarist oppression. Chapters from the Book of Psalms were recited by Joseph Borenstein, president of Agudath Israel of Detroit; and Rabbis Lev in; Leib Bakst, rosh yeshiva, Beth Yehudah Schools; Chaskel Grub- ner, executive director, Council of Orthodox Rabbis; David Lieber- man, dean, Beth Yehudah Schools; Ernest Greenfield, president, Re- ligious Zionist Organization; Ger- ald Werner, principal, Akiva He- brew Day School; and Yitchok David Grossman, from Migdal Haemek, Israel.
