Flint Jewish Community Council Conducts
Active Campaign in Defense of USSR Jewry

Flint. Jewry plays a vital role
among Michigan communities in
conducting an active campaign in
defense of Russian Jewry.
Three leaders from this commu-
nity—Michael Pelavin, Dr. Jack
Stanzler and Dr. Leon Rosky-
represented the Flint community
at the Washington conference, Dec.
30, which was convened by the
Conference of Presidents of Major
American Jewish Organizations
and the American Jewish Confer-
ence on Soviet Jewry.
Non-Jews, clergymen, news-
papermen and others joined with
Jewish citizens in appeals in de-
fense of Jews unjustly con-
demned at the Leningrad trial
and In support of the right of
Jews to leave Russia and to set-
tle in Israel.
Congressman Ronald W. Riegle,
speaking in the U.S. House of Rep-
resentatives, condemned the Len-
ingrad trial and declared:
"The whole world was shocked
to read that Mark Dimshits and
Eduard Kusnetzov were sentenced
to death by the firing squad, and
nine were given extended prison
terms ranging from four to 15
years . . .
It is truly a tragedy that in
the 20th Century citizens living
within the borders of the Soviet
Union, such as nine of these de-
fendants, are not allowed to visit
or emigrate to Iirael, their reli

of their sacred birthrights — the

hear the pleas of the many promi-

of Russian Jews to Israel.

at the sentences. No Jewish citi-

today can feel secure until this
kind of brutal treatment is eradi-

these defendants."
A program to evaluate the
Russian - Jewish situation has
been called for 12:15 p.m. Thais-
day, by the Temple • Beth El
Sisterhood.
Responding to an appeal by the
Flint Jewish Community Council
for special action by non-Jews,
Michigan Attorney General Frank
Kelley cabled to USSR Ambassador
Anatoly Dobrynta in Washington:
"The harsh sentences handed
out at the recently completed
Leningrad trial leads to the con-
clusion that its purpose was not to
punish criminals, but, rather, to
intimidate Jews who would like
to leave the Soviet Union. Such
misuse of the legal system dis-
honors the country that uses such
tactics.
"Initead of expending time and
energy treating the Jews who wish
to leave the Soviet Union as crimi-
nals, I urge your government to
let -those, who so desire, freely
leave the Soviet Union."
Senator Philip A. Hart informed
the Flint Community Council:
"As a co-sponsor of Senate Reso-
lution 501 passed Tuesday by the
United States Senate, I identify
