Prophetical portion, I Kings 2:1.12. Candle lighting, Friday, Jan. 5, 4:59 p.m. VOL. LVIII. No. 17 January 8, 1971 Page Four Need to Round Up Hidden Community Forces Accepting the fact that United Jewish Appeal income must be doubled and Israel Bond investments should be at least twice the income hitherto provided to assist Israel's economy, and taking into consideration the urgency of providing large sums for new buildings in new areas for centers, the aged and our schools; considering the necessity to supplement community agency funds with added means of providing for salary and other increases, there will be need to find added ways of raising the large quota that is being speculated for 1971. We use the term "speculated" advisedly, because no official quota has been set here, and because quotas always are considered with tongue in cheek. There is the factitious approach: if we ask for more we may get more. This way of facing issues won't work in our time. The funds requested are too urgent to be treated with a lack of firmness. Therefore, there is need to study existing ways of enlarging both on income and on the contributing forces. While we have broached the subject of the number of contributors in our commun- ity in the past, it is urgent that the subject be renewed for serious consideration. In the accompanying chart, there is a record of Detroit Jewry's gifts to Israel and to our national and local agencies. We have gone far from the year 1926 when 3,185 donors provided $738,242 for all needs, to the present. Last year 24,832 people gave a record sum of $11,609,107. Twice this sum is required in 1971, and if anything approach- ing it is to be raised, we must probe the possibility of enlarging upon the number of donors. There is no way of judging the accom- panying figures on the basis of community strength. There is no positive way of know- ing whether the Greater Detroit Jewish pop- ulation has grown or declined. But there is justified reason to believe that at least 5,000 more Detroiters should be enrolled in the ranks of the givers, and that number could make a difference between total suc- cess or partial failure. It is true that 1948 was the year of nation building in Israel. That year the Allied Jew- Anti-Semitic Stupidities There is only one way to describe the attitudes toward the Jews and the USSR policies in relation to Israel: they are utterly stupid! Think of the great goals that could be attained by actually' striving for peace! Friendly relations between Jews and Russians would redound to the benefit of the USSR. Every effort toward establishing amity be- tween Arabs and Jews would help create friendship not only in the Middle East, for Russia, her allies and the Israelis, but with Russian the United States as well. But if the type of diplomacy we witness in Russia can be labeled stupid, imagine how much more stupid is the Communist role in destroying a ll the steps towards friendship with the Unit ed States! A great nation, having progressed im- mensely since the days of the Czars, the existing Russian government, instead of ad- hering to the highest humanitarian ideals, has chosen a path of return to Czarism. The latter was cruel as well as stupid. The Communists are not too far behind the days of the Black Hundreds in emulating their medievalism. ish Campaign had 30,734 contributors. This year is a critical one-for Israel and for local agencies whose services must not be interrupted. For Israel, in the philanthropic sphere and as investments, this community is asked for $16,000,000. Can we round up the 5,000 or more indifferent people to under- stand the needs and to share in the responsi- bility of giving generously? A serious duty devolves upon our com- munity's leaders. They must review the planning processes on the basis of these facts which describe the - manner in which this community will share in providing for life- giving means to Israel and to our established Contributions to World Peace institutions. Are we in the position to make our com- munity a total or near-total participant in the 'Religion of Ethical Nationhood' goals ahead of us for the current year-and for the years ahead?
