'Land of the Dragon' Coming Here `Jew in America' Topic of Student Writing Contest Junior and senior high school students in the community are eligible to win cash prizes of $100 each for the best poem, essay and short story on "The Jew in Amer- ica," Steve Segall, chairman of the writing contest conimittee, announced. Others on the committee are Debbi Shulman, Jeff Richmond, Mindy Ruzumna, Laurie Sendler. Michael Edelman, Barbara Siegel and Rhonna Sachs. Assisting the committee is Joel Verbin of the Jewish Center staff. Judges will include community leaders and students. Deadline for entries is March 1. Rules can be obtained from the Center group services division, DI 1-4200. Student planners will meet 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Center to receive copies of the rules and registration forms. The movie "Sound of Poetry" also will be shown. Youth not on the commit- tee but who are interested in see- ing the movie, are invited. The question of whether the community is responsive to the needs of youth will be explored at a weekend seminar beginning today under the sponsorship of Habonim Labor Zionist Youth. The discussion will open at 8 p.m. in the Workmen's Circle Center, and all youth are invited. A panel will explore the sub- ject, "Judaize/Radicalize," whose tone was set in a resolution by Habonim of North America. It was felt that the community was un- responsive to the needs if young people and that it was responsible for their alienation. Also expressed was the view that Jewish educa- tion was substandard and that the structure of the community was undemocratic. Speakers will include an au- thor of the resolution, Rail Gold- man, a member of the Habonim movement's central committee, from Chicago. Others are Sherwood Sandweiss of the American Jewish Commit- tee; Rabbis Gerald Teller of Cong. S h a a r e y Zedek and James I. Gordon of Young Israel of Oak- Woods, who teaches at the United Hebrew High School; and Joel Altus, formerly with the American Jewish Congress and now a teach er at the Hebrew High School who claims to be a devout leftist. We had a lot of fun, along with our principal, Rabbi Werner, Frank Leiderman and Dennis Eis- enberg, who were kind enough to accompany us. Erev Hanuka, in addition to a wonderful Hebrew musical play put on by the third grade, grades four through seven provided the school and public with a Hanuka art exhibition. The fifth grade formed different clay objects. The sixth grade made sculptures from wood and toothpicks. And the seventh grade created a large mural with scenes of the Hanuka story. We are also planning for the junior high a shabaton, including davening, eating, singing and learning together an entire Shabat. •••• ■■ -•..1,..”- forbidden their students to parti- cipate in such demonstrations, an injunction some of the students have ignored. The editor, Yossi Klein of Brook- lyn, said the new publication was developed to be "the national voice of the Jewish high school activist" and to be a forum for the views of a Jewish Affairs Commission which, he said, was started last September as an independent or- ganization for Jewish high school students. The leadership of the group comes from Orthodox stu- dents in day high schools in the New York area. He told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that the commission now has representation from more than 25 yeshiva high schools and pub- lic schools in the New York metro- politan area. He said its purpose was "to educate Jewish youth to the problems of Jews, with em- phasis on Soviet Jewry, and to translate this education into mean- ingful action."
