Rehovot Team Syn

REHOVOT — Weizmann I n-
stitute announced that its scientists
had made a major contribution
toward research on the living cell
and on virus with their success-
ful synthesis of tRNA (transfer
ribonucleic acid) molecule, which
will help in understanding the na-
ture of the genetic code.
This finding culminates three
years of intensive research by
Prof. Uriel Z. Littauer and his col-
leagues. The research has been
supported by the U.S. National
Institutes of Health, which pre-
sented Prof. Littauer with an ad-
ditional three-year grant to con-
tinue his work.

thesizes Key Molecule to Help Read the Gentic Code
The signif icance of this ac-

hievement is based on the key
role of ULNA in the process
of protein synthesis, where it
serves to introduce specific amino
acids into the protein chains
which form the building blocks
of all living matter.
Each amino acid is transported
by one or more types of transfer
ribonucleic acid specific to it. Thus
each type of transfer ribonucleic
acid must include information that
permits reading of the genetic
code, information ensuring that the
amino acid in question finds its
proper place in the synthesized
protein.

recommended further action by the
Federation in the area of mental
retardation.

The report conceded, first, that
services to the Jewish retarded
properl ybelong within the scope
of ongoing agency problems and
are to be encouraged.
Second, it was recommended
that, because the dimensions of
need, costs of facility, and other
factors, are largely unknown, a

chairmanship of Julian H. Scott.
The Parents' Association con-
tinues to show its film, "Barbara

the Jewish retarded, to various
organizations within the community
and outstate. Bookings can be ar-
ranged through the association, at
the Jewish Center.

Several years ago, Prof. Littauer
and his colleagues were able to
show that certain bacteriophages
(viruses that attack bacteria) are
able to induce the formation of
specific and new tRNA molecules.
Their research indicated that the
DNA of these bacteriophages car-
ries several genes that code for
tRNA.
