"These first official functions of the Campaign help set the tone of our fund-raising efforts," stated Meyer M. Fishman and Max M. Shaye, 1971 campaign chairman. Mondry are calling for a response to the need for $400,000,000 from Ameri- can Jewry—twice the 1970 sum— to support the humanitarian serv- ices in Israel which that country can no longer sustain on her own. Mrs. Melvin Kolbeit, chairman of the women's division pre-cam- paign, pointed out that rising costs at home and increased pressure abroad necessitate a larger corn- mittment from those who care about the needs to be met. Peres and Haber have been in- strumental in increasing the means by which oppressed Jews can find lives of freedom and dignity. Peres, who served as director general and deputy minister of the Israel ministry of defense, played an important role in obtaining the equipment which has made Israel's armed forces into a modern army. In his dual ministry posts he is at the core of the vital communica- tions of the country. The Joint Distribution Commit- tee which Haber heads is the larg- est Jewish overseas welfare serv- ice.
