NEW YORK (.ITA)—Research in
the use of videotape in training
teachers for children from poverty
areas is one of four research
studies for which the Associated
YM - YWHAs of Greater New York
has received federal grants total-
ling more than $265,000.
Sidney J. Silberman, the new
president of the Associated Ys, the
nation's largest metropolitan asso-
ciation of Jewish community cen-
ters, said the other research
studies concern nutrition, self-
help programs for the aged and
the special needs of fatherless
families. The organization's Center
for Community Research was re-
cipient of the federal funds.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Israel Air-
craft. Industries Ltd. ranks first
among Israeli firms giving employ-
ment to new immigrants. It has
provided jobs for some 400 new-
comers during the last four years.
The firm has over 11,000 em-
ployes, many of them trained tech-
nicians and engineers from abroad.
According to Al Schwimmer, the
firm's president, several dozen
prospective immigrants have sign-
ed contracts and many others are
negotiating for employment when
they come to IsraeL He said his

`Cold Feet' Cold Cure
Fifty students from the Amer-
ican College in Jerusalem trav-
eled to the Negev kibutz Sde
Acker to meet David Ben-Gurion.
The former Israeli prime min-
ister spent nearly two hours with
the young people, discussing a
wide variety of topics, reminisc-
ing about the days of the Otto-
man Empire. the British Man-
date and the foundation of the
state of Israel. The students
came to Sde Boker after their
dawn ascent of Masada.
Jews in Israel Number
2559,500; Birth Rate Up
JERUSALEM (JTA)
The
population of Israel fell only 2,000
short of 3,000,000 at the end of
1970.
Of the total,. Jews. numbered
2,559,500, according to statistics
_released by the Central Bureau
of Statistics. The bureau reported
that the Jewish birth rate was
rising and that two-Thirds of The
Jewish population growth last year
was due to natural increase.
The Jewish birth rate climbed
to 24 per 1,000 in 1970 compared
to 23.4 in 1969 and 22.8 in 1968.
But the Jewish birth rate is still
only half as high as the birth rate
of Arabs in Israel. The ministry
of tourism reported that a record
436,700 tourists visited Israel last
year, compared to 409,000 the year
before. Eighty-seven per tent of
the -tourists came by air.

JERUSALEM (JTA)—American
Reform Judaism resolved here to
place Israel at the center of its
educational activities. A resolu-
tion to that effect was adopted by
130 delegates attending the 16th
congress of the American Reform
Educators Conference.
The delegates agreed to send Re-
form educators to Israel regularly
to attend special courses. They ask-
ed the Jewish Agency's education
department to organize courses for
Israeli students at American uni-
versities to train them for teach-
ing assignments at Reform schooli.

JERUSALEM — A fully automated
plastics factory-opened
.opened here Nov.
23. -Mayor Teddy Kollek inaugu-
rated the Rotoplas 'plant, which
utilizes- rotational molding to form
plastic.
One of the plant's owners is
Louis Barnett, a Fort Worth chemi-
cal engineer. He said that the
molding machine is the largest in
the world.
Another owner. Dr. Alexander
Rafaeli, said that expansion and.
research are in the plans of the
Rotoplas plant. The factory is lo-
cated in Talpiot, a new industrial
area of Jerusalem.
