School for Converts Probes Motivation

The cautious approach to the
sincerity of the would-be convert
was described as stemming partly
from the fact that most candidates
apply because they are planning to
marry Jews. Accordingly, Rabbi
Freiman reported, it would be in
error to consider such candidates
as prospective "sincere converts
who make this move out of a sense
of belief in Judaism. Had the can-
didates not been planning mar-
riage to Jews, they would never
have considered conversion."
He expressed a personal opinion
that "the Jewish partner of a con-

NEW YORK (JTA) — A Long
Island school for converts has a
standing policy of seeking to de-
termine — before accepting candi-
dates for conversion—whether the
reasons for the application involve
pressure of such a kind as to make
highly doubtful the possibility of
a durable commitment to Judaism.
Such candidates are discouraged.
The policy was described by
Rabbi Donald Freiman of Atlanta,
who served a Long Island con-
gregation at Westbury before mov-
ing to Atlanta, and who was a di-
rector of the 3liilel Institute for
Judaism, sponsored by the Nassau-

Viewed as 1st Hippies

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — The Uni-
ted States and England usually are
cited as the original home of the
hippies.
According to the Israel weekly
Davar Hashavuah, organ of the
United Labor Party, the title
should really go to Israel.
The first hippies, says the maga-
zine, were the pioneers of 50 years
ago who rebelled against their
middle-class establishment, wan-
dered about unshod from place to
place, spent their time dancing
and carried on in a manner char-
acteristic of the modern-day hip-
pies.
Many Israelis registered vigor-
ous protest against equating the
modern-day hippie with idealists
who endured every discomfort in
rebuilding a land that had been
left desolate over the centuries.
