OBITUARIES

Jules Schubot, Noted Jeweler, 69

Jules R. Schubot, a onetime
"pocket peddler" of jewelry to
actors in the Bonstelle Playhouse
who rose to become one of De-
troit's best known jewelers, died
Tuesday at age 69. He was resid-
ing in Miami Beach for the winter.
Mr. Schubot could credit Jesse
Bonstelle, founder of the theater,
with starting him on the road to
a career in jewelry. He worked in
the theater nights and in the jew-
elry store days during his teen
years. It was suggested that he
may as well start making a profit,
instead of selling jewelry to actors
at cost.
One of Detroit's leading manu-
facturing jewelers for 50 years,
Mr. Schubot and his son Douglas
had just celebrated 30 years at
their downtown Detroit location,
33 John R. The father and son
together designed, created and
manfactured jewelry, and Douglas
continues to carry on the Schubot
tradition of quality.
Active in the TB and Health
Society, Mr. Schnbot designed
the jewel-studded golden slipper
presented at the charity Cin-
derella Balls over the past two
decades. He was a director and
corporative member of the Boys
Clubs, a founder and director of
the Hundred Club and a past
recipient of the Maryglade Col-
lege Knights of Charity Award.
Mr. Schubot also belonged to
Temple Beth El, the Chautauqua
Society, Press Club, Variety Club,
Standard City Club and Franklin
Hills Country Club.
Besides his son, Mr. Schubot
leaves his wife, Baraga; a -daugh-
ter, Mrs. Harm (Reta) Hesse of
Paterswalde, Netherlands; two
brothers, Maurice Schubot and
Harvey Seymour of Los Angeles;
