YOU CAN EAT

The Best of Everything

By Danny Raskin

A VOID is being filled at
Blazo's Restaurant on W. Eight
Mile Rd. and Coolidge in Oak
Park . . . A supper club for
today's moderns! . . . The new
Nautilus Room, seating 80, swings
every Friday and Saturday night
from 9 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. with the
very popular folk singing of Dick
and Star, a married duo who both
sing and play guitar . . . Also plus
the folk songs, their large reper
Loire includes hit songs from
musicals . . . Blazo's liquor-less
nitery is fun and something out
youths have needed for a long
time!
NOW ELECTED state repre
sentative, with much of his time
spent at the Capitol, Joe Forbes
has made sure he has his delica
tessen by opening the Pic-A-Deli
in Lansing . . . on W. Saginaw in
the Lansing Mall . . . It seats 40
people, is just 10 minutes from the
State Capitol and is the only deli-
catessen in Lansing . . . Last one
was Brother's about 10 years ago.
TWO GALS AND A GUY work-
ing nights at Hugo's in the Hotel
Park Shelton, Kirby and Wood:
ward, are among the reasons
for such come-back popularity
by one of Detroit's finest dining
and wining spots ... Julie Green-
ing, Hazel Stine and Sam Pop-
lawski make up the trio whose
extraordinary abilities place
them high on the ladder of serv
ice excellence... They're among
Detroit's very tops!
PET PEEVES ... Waitresses in
restaurants who pick up salad in.
gredients with hands to fill indi-
vidual salad bowls . . . Why can't
they use the proper tongs?
NEXT TIME YOU'RE in Toledo,
make it a must to visit the Granada
Gardens Sea Food House on Mon
roe St.. . . The sea delicacies are
delicious, service good and prices
reasonable . . . Bossman Iry Sha-
piro or the Town House's famed
Aku Aku room, opened Granada
Gardens when the demand became
so treat for a true sea food house
in Toledo ... I had a first with
baked Boston Scrod, a very deli-
cious fish ... Scrod must be fresh,
not frozen ... and so much is sold
at Granada Gardens that the turn-
over allows for constant freshness
. . . It was a most interesting ex-
perience in delightful dining which
folks who love good sea food
should not miss!
BE SURE TO CHECK your bill
wherever you go . . . If you find
an error, it could be just a mis-
take . . . Then again, depends on
the place!
THE DECOR AT Paradiso Cafe
on Woodward is modern add the
atmosphere chic, but the food is
prepared with an Old World home-
style touch . . . Spaghetti in a
dozen forms heads. the list of
Italian specialties, and the Amer-
ican dishes get special attention.
AS STATED IN the December
issue of AAA Motor News, Ted's

Restaurant on Woodward and
Square Lake Rd.. is "quite a jump
from Ted's trailer, specializing in
the 'World's Longest Hot Dog' and
Michigan's first drive-in restau
rant in 1934 to feature full-course
dinners served on pewter plates
with a wine list, fancy cocktail
bar and 200 employes" . . . Ted's
still has the foot-long hot dogs.

IN 1621. ANY French innkeeper
was liable to arrest and imprison-
ment if a patron complained of a
stomach ache after eating . . .
(What a way to get out of paying
a check!).
DID YOU KNOW . . . that in
1799, a full-course dinner in any
New York City restaurant could
be obtained for 18 cents? . . .
that the first public restaurant
was opened in Egypt in 512 BCE
(it served only one dish, consist-
ing of cereal, wild fowl and on-
ions) . . that in 325 CE, when
English knights offered to
"spread the carpet" for friends,

ANGEL'S
HOUR 'GLASS

-

It meant that they invited them
to dinner . . . In those days,
"carpets" were tablecloths.
CUSTOMER OF ANGEL and
Hank Panek at Angel's Hour Glass
on W. McNichols, is a slow-but-
steady drinker . . He's never
drunk enough to stagger, but he's
always in a happy frame of mind.
. . Recentl y, when his wife
thought she was catching a cold,
she took a short snort out of his
bottle, then went into the bedroom
to tuck their child in bed "Oh,
mommy," the youngster said,
sniffing hard, "I notice you're
using daddy's perfume."
