Unique Course Links
Hebrew Prophets With
Modern Black Leaders

NEW YORK—Some of the Jew-
ish radical students attending an
experimental Indiana University
course relating the teachings of
the Hebrew prophets to those of
such modern black leaders as
Malcolm X were stimulated by the
course to greater Jewish identifi-
cation, according to a report by
the course instructor.
The report by Prof. Sheldon
Geller of the university's political
science department appeared in a
recent issue of Clearing -House, a
professional bulletin issued by the
Bnai Brith Mittel Foundations for
!Mel directors and counselors.
The experimental course was given
during spring 1970 and was de-
scribed, in an introductory note,
as "a stimulating model of an
imaginative and successful ap-
proach to relevant subject matter
and instructional methods."
The Jewish faculty member said
that, in his encounters with stu-
dents, he had observed that many
Jewish collegians "had either for-
gotten or neglected our own
prophetic tradition and preferred
to Imitate the life style of black
ghetto nationalists and adopt a
New Left ideology which rejects
the Jewish heritage."
With "the encouragement ' and
tutoring" of Rabbi James Dia-
mond, Hillel director at Indiana
University, he prepared a course
with the goal of seeking "to convey
the prophetic message and experi-
ence" as an experimental offering
in the university's political science
department designed to deal with
"relevant problems."
He reported that 106 students
took the course.

rived at Technion for a year-long
stay to study general relativity.
Next year, a graduate of Technion
will be selected to spend a year at
Brandeis.

A scanning electron microscope,
the only one of its kind in Israel,
has been installed in the materials
engineering department of Tech-
nion. Known as SEM, the new
microscope permits detailed ex-
amination of the surface of any
material by projecting a sharply
magnified picture on a television
screen.
SEM, through the variety of it3
applications, will benefit indus-
trial and scientific research in
Israel. It can help analyze, for
example, the causes of metal fa-
tigue in aircraft, automobiles and
buildings.

The annual Sigmund Braverman
Prize for "an original and creative
architectural design" has been
awarded this year jointly to Mena-
chem Kleinman and Yaakov Roth,
two recent graduates of Technion's
faculty of architecture and town
planning. Their design for an air-
port terminal won high praise
from the panel of judges.
Both were born in Eastern Eur-
ope and came to Israel as children.
The prize was established by
Mrs. Libbie Braverman in mem-
ory of her late husband, a distin-
guished architect in Cleveland,
who designed more than 40 syna-
gogues and Jewish community
buildings in America.
Technion also announced the
award of the Abraham and Deb-
orah Sagorsky Prize in Architec-
ture and Town Planning. The two
winners, who will share the prize
of 5,000 pounds ($1,450), are Amos
Livnat and Israel KimchL The
prize is administered jointly by
Technion and the Hebrew Univer-
sity.
