Hatred for Jews is the Cause For the Latest Outrage Perpetrated in USSR Hijacking is the charge, but the intent of the Russian court under the inspiration of the Soviet government is to intimidate Jews and to stem the growing tide of the demand for the right of Jews to leave Russia and to settle in Israel. Fourteen leading American intellectuals, including three Nobel Laureates and two Pulitzer Prize winners, assailed the Leningrad trial as part of a campaign by the Soviet leadership "to intimate the untold numbers of Soviet Jews who wish to maintain their Jewish identity." In both houses of the U. S. Congress, in the final hours of the present session, strong condem- nations were heard of the treatment accorded Jews in Russia, and senators and congressmen joined the national gathering of Jewish leaders, held in Washington Wednesday, in calling upon President Nixon for direct action to prevent the executions. Representatives of Jewish communities from all states were in assembly in Washington Wednes- day to express horror at what had transpired in Leningrad. They called for international action to prevent repetitive trials which already are anticipated in Leningrad, Kishinev and Riga. Five U. S. senators spoke out Tuesday in favor of a strong official administration protest against the death sentences. They were Birch Bayh, Indiana, Abraham A. Ribicoff, Connecticut, and Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts, all Democrats; and Jacob J. Javits, New York, and Robert Dale, Kansas, Republicans.
