Black Jews Plan Aliya; Consider Ritual Conversion ATLANTIC CITY (JTA)--A black rabbi, who recently visited Israel with several members of his con- gregation, has announced the in- tentions of his group to emigrate there in the near future. Rabbi Abel Respes, spiritual leader of Temple Adat Beyt Mo- sheh, located in Elwood, a small community near here, said that approximately 50 black Jews were planning to make the journey. "In Israel," he said, "I felt we were all 'Yehudim'—all Jews—and there was no distinction in this because of color, in many ways, we greatly resembled the Oriental segment there, who comprise at least one-fourth of the population." The 50-year-old rabbi said he has met Jews of his race from Morocco and Yemen who treated him as a "brother." Rabbi Respes said that his congregants were particularly interested that their children grow up as Jews in IsraeL Rabbi Respes stated his group is prepared to undergo ritual conver- sion should the Orthodox authori- ties in Israel so demand. He noted that the black Jews from Chicago, who recently emi- grated to Israel and settled in Dimona, have encountered great hardships because of their refusal to fulfill requirements imposed by Orthodox Judaism. "Although we firmly believe we are true Jews," declared Rabbi Respes, "we will readily consent to undergo ritual conversion, as long as this will guarantee acceptance into the Jew- ish community." Meanwhile, the charge of "racism" leveled by a Conserva- tive Jewish leader, Rabbi Wolfe Heiman, executive . vice presi- dent of the Rabbinical Assembly, against those who "contend that a halakhic question applies to black Jews only and not to white Jews," was rejected by Rabbi Moshe Sherer, executive presi- dent of Agudath Israel of Ameri- ca, national Orthodox movement, as "insulting and totally devoid of substance." Rabbi Sherer pointed out that the original claim that most of the American Blacks who call them- selves Jews have "no legitimate claim to Jewishness whatsoever" was made by a converted black Jew, Robert Coleman and was based on years of study. Rabbi Kelman's charge was made in a statement to the Jewish Telegra- phic Agency. Rabbi Sherer scored the Con- servative rabbinical leader for "im- porting to the United States the 'Who is a Jew' controversy that raged in Israel for many months, by insisting that when one 'says he is Jewish, it should be accepted' —the same position taken by the anti-Orthodox in the Holy Land." "The epithet 'racist' will not de- ter Orthodox Jews from insisting that a strict halakhic yardstick be applied to every case of question- able Jewishness, regardless of color. In the light of the serious accusations made by converted black Jews and experts about the authenticity of black Jews, their Jewish identity must be based upon halakhic proof," the Ortho- dox leader declared. NEW YORK (JTA) The Federa- tion Employment and Guidance Service began this week its annual hunt for young people to serve as counselors at summer resident camps and city day camps with indications that, because of the current business recession, the search would be easier for the coming summer than it was for the 1970 camp season. More than 1,000 counselors are being sought again to fill positions at the 53 country resident camps and city day camps conducted by the Fed- eration of Jewish Philanthropies.
