400 Arabs Participate With Jews in Festive Folklore Evening at the Hebrew University JERUSALEM — The Hebrew University was the site of a recent Arab-Jewish "folklore evening," as the university's Adult Education Center marked the opening of the fourth year of its Arab-Jewish cul- tural project. The gala event was attended by more than 600, includ- ing some 350 Arabs from East Jerusalem and 50 Israeli Arabs from Haifa, who joined in com- munal singing of Arab and He- brew songs. It was the first time that Arabs from East Jerusalem had attended in such numbers a function at the Hebrew University. The Arab-Jewish cultural proj- ect, begun just after the Six-Day War, this year encompasses the teaching of Hebrew to 250 East Jerusalem Arabs, an increase of 40 per cent since last year, and Arabic to 150 Jews from West Jerusalem, up by 150 per cent since last year. The lessons are conducted at the Ecce Homo Convent of the Sisters of Zion Order, on Via Dolorosa in the Old City of Jerusalem. In addition to this year's Arab students, some 100 former Arab participants in the program, who maintain contact with the Adult Education Center, attended the evening. The university's Wise Auditor- ium on the Givat Earn campus was filled to capacity when Jeru- salem Mayor Teddy Kollek opened the evening by wishing "this con- structive activity" all good for its new academic year. Greetings also were brought by Kalman Yaron, director of the Adult Education Center and prime mover of the project, who recalled the modest beginning 31/2 years ago and said that if the present development continues, next year's opening might take in Jerusalem's largest convention hall. He expressed the hope that in two years the Adult Education Center would move into its own building, to be named for Martin Buber, on the university's Mount Scopus campus. Yaron said that "We do not limit ourselves only to language teaching, as this is only a means for fostering better understanding, RABBI SHAIAU. Shanti said that he believed it is possible that such a cultural and social renaissance may come about in this generation. Prof. Aharon Kleinberger, He- brew University associate profes- sor of education and chairman of the board of the Adult Education Center, expressed his appreciation to the Sisters of Zion Order for supporting the project. o • • Arab University Planned, Allon Says JERUSALEM (ZINS) — Educa- tion Ministei Yigal Allon has con- firmed that officials of his min- istry are preparing plans for the founding of an Arab university- in Ramallah, which was previously part of Jordan. About a year ago, Moshe Dyan conferred with Arab spokesmen in the liberated areas about the es- tablishment of such a university, but they declined to consider the proposal, insisting that their young people would use the academic facilities in Amman, capital of Jordan. It now appears that the Arab leaders have altered their view and are more receptive to the pro- posal, because many. Arab parents have qualms about sending their children to Jordan which lives under the threat of bloody civil war. Orthodox Aversion to TV Fails to Stop Popularity in Israel JERUSALEM (ZINS) — Tele- vision crews who converged on the Wailing Wall to photograph some 5,000 worshipers were met with epithets and some physical beat- ings at the hands of the unwill- ing subjects. This deep-seated anti-television feeling among the observant Jews of Jerusalem provoked a Beth Din of the Nature! Karta to excommu- nicate a Idea Shearim Jew who owned a television set. The rabbinical court ruled that no person may have any contact with the excommunicated Jew un- til he repents and removes the television set from his home. This case, however, seems to have little or no impact on televi- sion buying. Three years ago, there were 40,000 television sets In use; now there are 350,000, desPite the high cost of the ap- pliance.
