To get the nomination he defeated the speaker of the state senate in a primary. Joe Lieberman is already a ' veteran politico. He did service the office of Senator Ribicoff, and wrote a biography of James Bailey as chairman of the Demo- cratic National Committee. Utterly captivating and pos- sessed of a chemical personality, Lieberman is the nephew of an Orthodox rabbi, Joseph Ehren- krantz, of Stamford, Coca, and very comfortable and knowledgable ble in Judaism. The biggest vote getter in recent New York history is Arthur Levitt, who has bucked the Republican sweeps again and again in New York State to become its comp- troller. In the last election there were victories for such Jews as Milton Shapp, the new governor of Penn- sylvania, and the re-election of Morton Mandel and Frank Licht as governors of Maryland and Rhode Island. Teacher Strike Ends; Lydda Workers on Job 'The Other Germans' Published by Putnam During seven weeks in 1967-1988 the Swedish journalist Hans Axel Holm visited the East German village of Neustadt-Glewe. There he interviewed more than 100 of the 6,700 inhabitants. From these interviews he created "The Other Germans: A Report from an East German Town" which is the first lifelike and nonpartisan account of East Germany today. Although many of the villagers are powerfully influenced by their past, they are still committed to their new life; many feared sur- veillance while being interviewed and yet they spoke freely; many envied the wealth of West Ger- many but felt contempt for their ,capitalist neighbor. Holm makes no judgments: be is neither pro nor anti-Communist. The book has been published by Putnam. GOT YOUR DATE? CALL US! SEE US!
