Newsweek Poll Finds
42 Per Cent Oppose U.S.
Troops in an Israeli War

NEW YORK (ZINS) — A Gallup
poll, conducted by the weekly news
magazine, Newsweek, discloses
that out of 1,514 persons questioned,
42 per cent are opposed to the dis-
patch of American troopS in sup-
port of Israel, given the condition
that Israel's survival is at stake
in a war with the Arab world.
Only 14 per cent of those ques-
tioned would favor such a move,
and 32 per cent expressed no
opinion.
In the same survey, it appears
that 61 per cent of the group also
was opposed to any intervention by
America in behalf of King Hussein
and his regime, should it be threat-
ened by the Arab guerrillas.
On direct intervention for Jor-
dan, only four per cent were ready
to support a military intervention,
in case of danger to the throne.

Hussein Rejects Separate Peace, Cites Dayan

PARIS (JTA)—King Hussein of
Jordan ruled out the possibility of
a separate peace between Israel
and either his country or Egypt,
but said he favored eventual bor-
der adjustments because the 1967
borders were "cease fire" lines
only with all the injustices and
lack of logic which this implies?'
He spoke during an hour-long tele-
vision interview broadcast to 19
European and North African coun-
tries.
He said that border adjustments
can be effected only after Israel
withdraws completely from the
territories it occupied during the
June 1967 war and claimed that
any diplomatic initiative for peace
must now come from Israel "be-
cause we Arabs have done what-
ever we can by accepting the Se-
curity Council resolution and the

Rogers plan."

As Hussein replied to questions
from 10 French Middle East ex-
perts, Paris police battled about
100 French leftists who were try-
ing to storm the Jordanian em-
bassy here in protest against al-
leged Jordanian cruelty to Pale-
stinian guerrillas. Ten policemen
were injured and 15 demonstrators
were arrested. In the course of
his interview, Hussein had some
highly complimentary words for
Israeli Defense • Minister Moshe
Dayan but ruled out a meeting with
him or any other Israeli leader as

Young Soviet Olim
Adjusting Slowly

TEL AVIV (ZINS)—Young Jew-
ish immigrants arriving in Israel
have special problems of adjust-
ment traceable to their distorted
or insufficient views about Judaism
and the Jewish people, according
to a team of psychologists special-
ly assigned to research this prob-
lem.
The first difficulty stems from
the startling contrast between Is-
rael's landscape and that of the
sprawling Soviet world. There is
astonishment over the few lakes
and rivers and historical monu-
ments, as compared with what is to
be found in most of the Communist
countries.
-

second complication derives
from their hardened distrust of
any "establishment." They read
Israel's newspapers with skepti-
cism and the comment is often
heard to the effect that what is
printed is most probably a pack
of lies.

to convince them that the Soviet
propaganda was nothing more than

Another troublesome aspect is
their inbred hostility to religion.
In their youth, the slogan was
drummed into their heads, "We
don't believe in God; we believe in
man?'
In sharp contrast. Israel makes
the study of the Bible a require-
ment and this provokes perplexity
and questioning on the part of the
Soviet newcomers.
All of these problems, the psy-
chologists' team concludes, are
soluble and will be resolved in
time. Eventually, they say, these
young people will learn to adjust
to the realities of Israel's life-style,
and their trust in central authority
will be reinstated.

American College
in Jerusalem Offers
Summer Programs

NEW YORK — The American
College in Jerusalem, the only
English language four-year liberal
arts college in Israel, is offering
a special summer program for the
training of Hebrew teachers, it
was announced by Dr. Norman
Greenwald, president of the col-
lege.
The American College in Jeru-
salem is instituting this Hebrew
teachers' training program to help
meet the serious shortage of quali-
fied teachers," he stated.
Dean Leonard Goldstein, who
heads the American office of the
college, stated: "Since this pro-
gram will be of such great value
to communities in need of quali-
fied teachers, it would be an ex-
cellent investment on behalf of
their children's Jewish education
for communities to subsidize teach-
ers who wish to participate in this
program."
The institute will take place
July 13-Aug. 24. The program will
be under the direction of Dr. Louis
Katzoff of Highland Park, Ill.

being "pointless for the time be-
ing." His sharpest words were
reserved for advocates of a sepa-
rate Palestinian state in Jordan.
Hussein called the Palestinians
"normal citizens of Jordan with
whom a dialogue can and must be
found:" He said, however, that
only after a final settlement with
Israel is reached will the Pale-
stinians be offered the option of
remaining citizens of Jordan or
"voting for an autonomous Pale-
stinian province within the frame-
work of the Hashemite Kingdom."
He said that for the Arabs a
solution of the Mid East conflict
was relatively simple. "We either
recuperate our lost territories by
peaceful means or we shall have
to revert to military measures
which, unfortunately, could endan-
ger not only the peace of the region
but that of the entire world:'
Hussein rejected as "unaccept-
able" any plan to internationalize
part of Jerusalem. He said, how-
ever, that Jordan might agree to
the internationalization of the
united city, Jewish and Arab alike,
which could then become the capi-
tal of peace. His references to
Dayan were made when he was
asked to comment on a recent
statement by the defense minister
that "Hussein is the most honest
of all Arab leaders." Hussein said,
"It was very kind of him to say
this of me and I am deeply touch-
ed. I also consider him not only
a brave soldier and capable politi-
cian but also a great patriot of
his country?'
