In more than one sense, Leon
Uris continues his literary processes
of exposing the Nazi crimes, of
emphasizing the Israeli roles in
protecting their independence, in
dealing with the terror of the
Holocaust, in his newest novel,
"QBVII," published by Doubleday.
The title relates to the basic
theme of the novel—the court case
involving a Nazi criminal who
escaped punishment, settled in
England, was knighted and was
finally exposed in Queen's Bench
Courtroom Seven. This formed the
title.
Uris has written another very
long novel, but it holds the read-
er's interest throughout since it
is packed with action relating
to the Nazi physician who per-
formed criminal operations on
the victims of ilitlerism without
anesthesia, without cause, merely
out of the experimentalism of
the cruel Nazi medical teams.
To attain his goal, in the course
of the trial proceedings during
which the medical practices were
tested, Uris had to make a deep
study of terms relating to the acts
so criminally imposed upon the
victims of the Nazi murderers.
It is of interest that the accused
doctor was not a German: he was
a Pole; and his background intro-
duces also the Polish activities,
giving the author an opportunity
to condemn Polish anti-Semitism.
Indeed, in this story the Polish
Jew-baiting is condemned as much
as the German.
The witnesses who were gath-
ered to testify at the trial depicted
in the Uris story relate in their
presentations the experiences of
the sufferers in the era of German
terrorism. The novel deals with
an expose of the Nazis in a book
by a Jewish author, Abraham Cady
—he had reduced his name from
Cadyzynski — who described what
had happened in his "The Holo-
caust." In it, he listed the name
of the defendant in the trial, Adam
Kelno, the Polish physician, as
having performed very many il-
legal operations as part of the
experimentatiOns. By that time
Kelno had escaped being deported
when one of his victims could not
identify him, and he had served
in a British medical corps in
Sarawak, being knighted for his
services. He then felt free to sue
for damages for being listed as a
criminal.
The trial revealed the true
nature of his illegal and inhuman
actions and while he was grant-
ed a halfpenny verdict the guilt
became apparent: His own son
left him and the expose is as

absolutely no guilt about what he
had done."
Abraham Cady's son also leaves
tim—to go to Israel to fight for
the country's freedom. The novel
ends with an-AP note that he has
died as a pilot In Israel's air force.
This, too, marks a contrast—the
Nazi's son repudiating him, the
son of the author of "The Holo-
caust" dying a hero's death.
Uris has written a most readable
novel which marks an important
addition to the expose of anti-
Semitism and Nazism.

the evidence that
was given at the Eichmann trial
in Jerusalem. While the names
of the story are fictitious, the
tale itself relates to actual his-
toric experiences and "QB VII"
could well be called an historical
novel.
There are social lessons in the
story. Cady's barrister, in explain-
ing the actions of the Nazi doctors,
says to the author who defended
"The Holocaust" book, with refer-
ence to the Polish collaborator:
"Perhaps the acts were the re-
sult of some cruelty toward him as
a child. Poland handed him anti-
Semitism. He had a place to go
with his sickness. You know, Cady,
surgeons are a strange breed and
often as not surgery fulfills their
blood lust. So long as Adam Kelno
was in civilized places, surgery
took care of his needs. But turn
a man like this loose in a place
where all social order has collapsed
and you have a monster on your
hands. And then, when he went
back to a civilized society again,
he became a proper surgeon with
