• Lubavitcher Decry Pseudo-Hasidism' LOS ANGELES (JTA)—A Luba- vitcher sAkesman has denounced "rabbis and Jewish professionals who are greatly removed from the religious practices and spirit of Hasidism" who have "recently taken to guitars and accordions in vain attempts to fill their empty temples." The charge was made by Rabbi Shlomo Cunin, director of the Lu- bavitcher movement on the West Coast, who also declared that "It has become very fashionable these days to advertise and exploit Hasidism, its melodies and its prayers" in a society in which "we have become accustomed to com- mercializing everything." He charged that such rabbis and professionals hoped, by FOR THE BEST IN MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT SAM MASER And His Orchestra 358-0938 adopting the methods of rock :lagers, to present an "accept- able" image of Judaism to a modern-day society "and make it kosher by calling it Hasidic." He described as a "blatant mis- conception" the "romantic theory that the intellectual and emotional involvement in Hasidism can be divorced from the practical keep- ing of the commandments." He added that "there can be no true, unadulterated Hasidic service that does not conform to Halakha, the Jewish Law: heads covered by yarmulkes, separation of men and women during the service and no violation of the Sabbath by use of microphone and banjo." He remarked that young Jews who had attended such "pseudo- Hasidic" services had come to Chabad House, the Hasidic center on the West Coast, and expressed the belief that Hasidism was "a show or a Friday night singalong." He said there was "enough false- hood and hypocrisy within our modern-day mini-Judaism without trying to extend the field of cor- ruption into Hasidism." He as- serted that the basic appeal of the Hasidic movement "to Jews of all ages has been its honesty, sincer- ity and integrity" and that "the success of Chabad House in attract- ing modern-day students, profes- sors and professional people is proof of this." Bill Introduced to Stem Mounting Car Mishaps JERUSALEM (JTA) — Traffic violations were the subject of an angry exchange in the Knesset be- tween Transport Minister Shimon Peres and Uri Avneri representing the New Left Haolam Hazeh fac- tion. Avneri, who is anti-establishment on virtually every issue, opposed a bill introduced by Peres providing stiffer penalties for traffic offend- ers. The transport minister claimed that Avneri was issued 105 traffic summonses in a single year and that only his parliamentary immu- nity protected him from prosecu- tion. Avneri demanded that the Knes- set speaker publish a complete list of traffic offenses committed by all Knesset members. Peres hopes his new bill will stem the rising toll of highway fatalities- and injuries. It would empower police officers to suspend the driver's license of an offender for 30 days pending trial and would make it mandatory for the courts to revoke the licenses, of periodic offenders and persons involved in serious traffic violations. Punishment would be most se- vere for offenses committed with stolen vehicles. Minor traffic vio- lations would be punishable with suspended license revocations. Dr. Heinemann's letter was in acknowledgment of an olive tree sapling the Jerusalem Mayor sent him last month as a gift. The German leader expressed the hope that after the terrible suffering caused by the ongoing Middle East conflict, solutions would be found that could offer assurances of a just and lasting peace, followed by conciliation between the present enemies. He observed that "the sapling, once it has taken root, will be a token of the progress in the rela- tions between Federal Germany and the state of Israel."
