Hebrew "broke into print" first in Italy, where the printers Obadiah' (son of Moses) and the brothers' Menasseh and Benjamin (sons of Elhanan) of Rome, pioneered with Gutenberg's invention in Hebrew. The most famous Hebrew press in Italy was established in 1483 by the physician Israel Nathan of Soncino—the place name has become the trademark for that press, outstanding by the excellence of its productions. Then Inbar spoke to his Ameri- can audience, telling them how pleased he was that in a time of crisis for Israel, his nation still had time for fun and games. "It shows the world the spirit of the people of Israel," he said. "And it shows the people of Israel that it has friends who are willing to send their athletes to my country to compete with us." The Hapoel games are the old- est set of international games in Israel, pre-dating the Maccabia. "This year," Marty Cohen said, "they'll serve a double purpose. They'll help to celebrate Israel's Independence Day as well as the 95th anniversary of the Hapoel Sports Association." Telephone: 353-6044 Ninth Hapoel Games Set Into Motion Yossi Inbar, the president of the Israel Olympic Committee and ex- ecutive director of Hapoel, was in the USA recently to kick off plans for American involvement in next year's ninth Hapoel games. The first thing he did at a New York City banquet was to appoint Martin L. Cohen, manager of Local 105 of the ILGWU, as the Hapoel representative for the games in the United States. Cohen, in turn, named a committee of three New Yorkers to work- with him in as- sembling a United States team of 50 athletes, coaches and managers for the games, to be held in Israel April 29 through May 5, 1971. The threz are Jack Abram- son, Haskell Cohen any Ed Mosler. In a sense, the Hapoel games are Labor games, which is the reason that union-oriented Marty Cohen was selected to run the show in the United States, a job he also did for Hapoel five years ago. "The union movement in the United States will help to finance the American team," he said. "We work through the Amateur Athletic Union in selecting the best ath- letes possible. There are no re- strictions as to the selection ex- cept one—the athletes must be the very best." Ar- rangements have been made to give all of the visiting athletes the widest touring possible fol- lowing the games. In addition, a special Spring Festival will be held in conjunc- tion with the games in Haifa, and there will be evenings of dance, music and folklore. Marty Cohen was asked about the yachting competition. "The USA won't be in it," he said. "What about the Israelis?" "They're the world's best and of course will be entered," he said, explaining that the competition will be in the 420 class. "In case you don't know," he added, "Israel won the world individual title in 1969, and this past summer won the world's team championship." "What about the level of the other competition?" "The very best," Cohen said. "There was a seven foot high- jumper there five years ago. By the way, the newly emerging Afri- can nations will be there in strength. That's why we plan to take only our very best." Cohen indicated the American contingent would count heavily on swimmers, track and field stars, some weightlifters and wrestlers, and a basketball team. More Latin Americans May Emigrate to Israel JERUSALEM (JTA) — Dr. Is- rael Goldstein said here that social and economic conditions in Latin America are creating a situation that might cause more Jews to emigrate to Israel. Goldstein, chairman of the Ker- en Hayesod, reported on his re- cent Latin American visit to the Jewish Agency Executive. He said instability in Latin America is likely to be harmful to Jews be- cause most of them belong to the middle class, which is most vulner- able to social and economic up- heavals. Goldstein said it was the duty of the Israel government and the Jewish Agency to make sure that the country can meet its obliga- tions to absorb new immigrants from Latin America and anywhere else. He said this ability depended not only on the financial support of world Jewry but on the use Is- rael makes of the funds it receives. 9 9 13 9 L 9 JOHN FARNELL IS BACK WITH US AGAIN Please Call For Appointment B live a little! 9 B 13
