Hussein Challenged by West Bank Leader
to Grant Autonomy to Palestinians Now
JERUSALEM — One of the
strongest signed statements of
Palestinian self-determination to
emerge from the occupied terri-
tories since the June 1967 war
appeared recently in the Arabic
newspaper Al Quids, according to
Peter Grose in the New York
Times.
Hamdi Canaan, a former mayor
of Nablus and influential Arab
leader of the West Bank, took
issue with Jordanian King Hus-
sein's recent statements that the
future of the West Bank and of
the Palestinians could be discussed
only after a general peace settle-
ment with Israel.
"Why after liberation?" Canaan
demanded. "Why shouldn't Hus-
sein, right now, in advance of the
end of the occupation, amend the
constitution of Jordan, adding a
clause giving Palestine the right
of autonomy, with the West Bank
and the East Bank united in a fed-
eration, not a mere annexation?"
Canaan said the Palestinians did
not want a return to the "catas-
trophic" rule they endured before
the Six-Day War. They insisted on
reunion.
"We are not begging for auton-
omy; it is our right and we insist
upon it," Canaan said. "We will
accept no other solution at all."
An editorial appearing in Al
Quids took an even stronger
