B-G Tapes Interview By DAVID SCHWARTZ (Copyright JTA, Inc.) On a television panel, Barry Goldwater was asked about his son's visit to Israel. He said his son was very enthusiastic. So much so, he said, that he had told him he might want to exchange his Episcopalian faith for the Jew- ish faith of his grandfather. Barry Goldwater used to be in the department store business and he knows how frequently people come back for exchanges. We re call the story of an old absent- minded Yiddish poet. One time he went to buy a hat. The clerk showed him various styles and he would put each one on and stand before the mirror. He had a hard time making up his mind. Finally, he took a last look at all the hats he had tried on and then pointing to one, said, "I'll take that." It was his old hat which he had taken off to try on the new hats. Barry Goldwater appears to have a good bit of the Jewish heritage of his father, Mike, a Polish Jew who went west about the time of the California gold rush. If he hadn't gone to the American west, his children probably would have gone to the Nazi gas chambers, where many of Goldwater's rela- tives perished. Goldwater's daughter, too, we recollect, a couple of years back, went to Israel and lived for a time in a kibutz. The family ap- parently is not as hard boiled conservative as some suppose. • • • In truth, the kibutz is quite in the American tradition. You can have the kibutz and rugged indi- vidualism at the same time. Has not Israel that pluralistic system? If your blood pressure is good, and you find competitive capitalism in- spiring and invigorating, you can have that. If on the other hand. the race for money bores you, and when they hand you your salary, you cry "Take it away," you can have another system. Few seem to be aware of it, but the refugees who came on the Mayflower and laid the corner stone of this vast America on Plymouth Rock, lived for a time collectively. Plymouth Rock was in the beginning a kibutz. But the real American kibutz movement, the time when it flowered, was in SDE BOKER (ZINS) — David Ben-Gurion has taped a television interview which will be presented posthumously, it was learned here. - The 83-year-old Israeli statesman is said to have given candid replies on a series of questions, going into depth on many issues which have historic significance for future gen- Philly Joins Survey NEW YORK (JTA)—The Phila- erations. delphia Jewish community has an- nounced its participation in the first National Jewish Population Study of American Jewry under auspices of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds. Northland Shopping Center the middle of the 19th Century or a little earlier. It was the time of Emerson and Horace Greeley and both of them frequently visited Brook Farm, which was the most prominent of the collective settle meats. The country at the time was full of enthusiasts who had dreams not only of abolishing poverty, but of making labor a joyful thing. You would approach your job as you approach your hobby. You wouldn't be required to punch a clock. You would run joyfully to it. Brook Farm had something of the system to provide it. The work each one did was changed after two hours, so that no work would be boresome. • • • There were different kinds of these American kibutzim. There were the religious Shakers, who believed in socialism but didn't believe in sex. They were celibate. On the other hand, at the Oneida colony were the Perfectionists, led by John Humphrey Noyes, a grad- uate of Yale. They were for so- cialism and free love. There was the anarchist colony of Warren, a descendant of the Warren of Bunker Hill fame. In all, it is esti- mated there were some 200 of these collt. e colonies. But free land was easy to get in those days. And if you could get a piece of land easy, you could erect your log cabin and every month, when the landlord came around for the rent, you would pay yourself. A lot of people liked that sys- tem. The times didn't seem propi- tious for the experiments and they passed out of existence. • • • It seems to us that today, there is need of a revival of the kibutz movement in America. The kibutzim in Israel have at- tracted all classes and nations. Japanese, Scandinavians, children of affluent parents from America. The elder Henry James, father of two brilliant children, the psy. chologist William James and the novelist. Henry James, lived for a time in Brook Farm. He said he missed the noise and tumult of the outside world. It was too quiet for him. Many people would not like to live in a kibutz, but a lot of peo- ple would, and a lot of other people would like it at least for a brief time. We think it would be a healthy thing, if half a dozen kibutzim were strewn about in the various states of America. • • • A FAIR DEAL We get this story from London. Upon his son's graduation from college, the very successful London Jewish financier, Lord Swaythling, called him to his office. "Son," he said, "now that you've got your education, you will be expected to take your place in the business. Please report tomorrow at the office." "What will I get out of it?" asked the son. "Five per cent of the profits like the other members of the fam ily in the business," said Lord Swaythling. "Father," said the son, "how about making it two and a half per cent and letting me leave the office at noon?" A former UN ambassador from Mauretania, Miske is a known supporter of the Palestinian Arabs with access to their leadership. Writing in the magazine "Afri- casia", published in Paris, Miske quotes Peking as having told the guerrillas that, while it supports a prolonged people's war, it does not encourage either "adventurism or sectarianism of the left." 398-2462 Avegeble 2-6 Piece Orchestra Greenfield at 101/2 Mile Rd.
