Suffering of Iraqi Jews Unabated LONDON — When Iraq cospon- sored with Poland and the Ukraine a UN draft resolution condemning and recommending measures against Israeli "Nazism, racism, apartheid and other forms of dis- crimination", the pitiable remaind- er of Iraqi Jewry could emit a hollow laugh. The 2,500 Jews there continue to live a nightmare a year after pub- lic Baghdad hangings drew the condemnation of the civilized world. Since then, 21 more Jews have been executed, 18 of them in secret, according to the Jewish Observer and Middle East Re- view in London. "The authorities admit that a handful are still in prison after three years," the article states. "But there are also others de- tained incommunicado in the Rihab Palace and it is believed that several have been tortured. When the Iraqi authorities an- nounce that a Jew has escaped from prison, they usually mean they have killed him." The hangings are thought to have been instigated by Saddam Hussein, the Beath Party secre- tary. Although a full list of hang- ing victims is not yet available, those mentioned are Nassim Yair, Jacob Atrakchi, Shoua Soifer, Da- `Black Israelites' Claim Holy Land in WSU Panel A small Chicago-based group which calls itself "black Hebrew Israelites" held a symposium Sun- day at Wayne State University, at- tended by about 20 guests of Wayne's Association of Black Stu- dents. The Representative Government of the Immigrants, which claims to be the true decendants of the tribes of Israel, has laid its own claim to the Holy Land. It dis- avows the "Eastern European white Jews"' and the Jews "false possession of the land of Palest- ine". "The goal of the RGOI," reads its literature, "is to rebuild and restore the original Israelite nation . . . and expulsion of any imposters." The EGOI cites "black Is- raelites" who immigrated to Li- beria in 1967, and to Dimona, Israel, in 1969. It has petitioned the United Nations for recogni- tion as an international people. One of its major objectives is to "liberate" black Americans. For the presentation at Wayne State, the group invited a panel, in- cluding the RGOI minister of infor- mation, L. A. Bryant, and "Rabbi"- George Baker. At the symposium, members frequently quoted the Bible in their preesntations, and wore Stars of David turbans, or fezzes. Their flag consists of the 12 symbols of the 12 tribes on a blue background. The RGOI is described by its leader Bryant as a political move- ment, rather than a religious one. The group is affiliated with the black Jewish group "One Incor- porated" started by Bryant in 1963. vid Zbeb, Naji Saati, Fouad K. "Although Iraq has frequently issued laws proclaiming the rights of Jews, these are only "window dressing,' the Observer continues. "Jews are legally entitled to sell land, but, if they do, they are im- mediately asked where they have put the money. "Recently, a law was passed al- lowing Jews over age 60 to obtain passports. But as soon as a few ap- plied, the age requirements was raised to 67. Now it has been de- cided not to issue passports at all, even though this contradicts the present legislation. "Some 95 per cent of the Jews are estimated to be out of work. The other 5 per cent are allowed * * to work because the government wants to show them off to foreign journalists. Jews are staying coop- ed up at home and they dare not receive any letters or cables for fear of being accused of espion- age." The article says that three Jew- ish girls were falsley accused of stealing a refrigerator. While they were being kept in detention, their crippled mother died of hunger. (In a letter to the New York Times, Dr. Heskel M. Haddad, president of the American Com- mittee for Rescue and Resettle- ment of Iraqi Jews, Inc., sug- gested to an earlier letter writer that he learn the truth about the Middle East by going to Iraq "and find out about the fate of a Jewish community of 150,000 that lived in Baghdad for over 2,000 years—long before the Arab oc- cupation of Iraq. New Ambassador Sees France as Friendlier PARIS (JTA) — Israel's new ambassador to France said that "the climate between the two countries has already changed" for the better and that it was the hope of all concerned that this trend will continue. Ambassador Asher Ben-Natan addressed a luncheon given in his honor by the Anglo-American Press Association. He said there was a determination in both the Israel and French governments to "improve relations between them and re-open the dialogue." Franco-Israeli relations deterior- ated sharply at the time of the Six-Day War when then President Charles de Gaulle branded Israel an aggressor and declared an arms embargo which has not yet been lifted. , caws Immo CANADIAN WHISKY7A BLEND OF SELECTED WHISKIES.
