nent Philadelphia family has 'pro-
vided a major grant for the estab-
lishment of a social policy re-
search institute at Brandeis ,Uni-
versity which will seek new ap-
proaches to reduce or eliminate
the social and financial problems
faced by America's 20,000,000 el-
derly.
The Max Levinson Gerontolog-
ical Policy Institute—established
through a grant from the Levin-
son Foundation as a component of
Brandeis' Florence Heller Grad-
uate School for Advanced Studies
in Social Welfare—is named in
honor of Max Levinson, founder
of the United Petroleum Co.
In working to reduce or elim-
inate problems affecting the aged,
the Levinson Institute will at-
tempt to influence the policies
and practices of public and pri-
vate institutions at the national,
state and local levels.
Dr. Robert Morris, director of
the institute and professor of so-
cial planning at the Heller School,
said that "If present tendencies
continue, the economic position of
the elderly will deteriorate during
the next 20 years—that is, a larg-
er proportion of the elderly will
be in a condition of poverty de-
spite improvements in Social' Se-
curity. However, steps taken now
regarding the structure of retire-
ment planning, the wide extension
of private retirement plans to sup-
plement Social Security, and the
adoption of lifetime earning pat-

terns may reverse this tendency."
Dr. Morris also pointed out
that while Medicare has great-
ly reduced the financial burden
for health services for the el-
derly, it has not improved med-
ical care for them. Too many
elderly patients end up in pro--
prietary nursing homes, whose
standards he labeled as "vary-
ing, often unsatisfactory or dan-
gerous."
He said the elderly with lim-
ited incomes who are on public
assistance fare even worse.
Proportionately twice as many el-
derly on Old Age Assistance end
up in nursing homes at a much
higher cost than would be re-
quired if they were assisted to
remain in their own homes
through an adequate program of
personal social services.

pensable element in the establish-
ment of a just and lasting peace
in the Middle East."
It was approved in special poli-
tical committee by a vote of 46-19
