Aguda Charges Non-Orthodox Groups
Smear Yeshiva in Supreme Court Brief

CHICAGO — A strongly-worded
censure of the American Jewish
Congress and the American Jewish
Committee was adopted at the
Midwest convention of Agudath
Israel of America, charging these
groups with "smearing the yeshi-

vos before America's highest legal
tribunal."
The charge was leveled on the
basis of a friend of the court brief
recently submitted by the Amer-
ican Jewish Congress and several
other non-Orthodox groups to the
U.S. Supreme Court on a pending
case testing the constitutionality
of the Pennsylvania state law
which reimburses religious schools
for expenses incurred in the teach-
ing of certain secular subjects:
According to Agudath Israel, the
brief submitted by these groups
contends that religious schools
which benefit from the Pennsyl-
vania funds must be denied fur-
ther funds because they are "ra-
cially segregated." The brief con-
tains the following statement, said
Agudath Israel: "There are very
few Negro Jews, as a result of
which the Jewish day schools arc
virtually a hundred per cent
white."

Congress,

have regrettably
stooped to a new low in their
unrelenting fight against govern-
ment support for yeshivos. To
use the Jewish day schools as an
example of racially-segregated
institutions, even by implication,
is a. desecration of the Jewish
religion taught In these schools
— a religion which - first pro-
claimed to the world the equality
of all men."
The resolution concluded with
an appeal to the "grass-roots mem-
bers" of the American Jewish Con-
gress and American Jewish Com-
mittee to "put a halt to the anti-
yeshiva tactics utilized by the pro-
fessionals in their desperation to
stem the tide of growing public
approval of government aid for
nonpublic schools."
The three-day convention, which
opened on Thanksgiving Day, was
attended by 300 delegates from
eight communities in the Midwest,
including Detroit.
Rabbi Moshe Feinstein of New
York, noted Torah scholar, called
for higher standards of personal
observance and commitment to
Jewish religion as a prerequisite
for Jewish leadership. Rabbi
Mordechai Gifter, dean of the
Telshe Yeshiva of Wickliffe, 0.,
declared that the Jewish commu
nity must give top priority to Torah
study, "without which Jewish
policy will merely ape the secular
jungle society."
