ARAD. Israel — Detroiter Dr.
Sidney Friedlaender is co-chair-
man of a major international cen-
ter for the treatment of asthma,
being launched in the new Israel
city of Arad, overlooking the Dead
Sea.
Plans for an entire asthma re-
habilitation village, with a 500-bed
sanitorium as its initial focus,
were revealed to more than 100
authorities on asthma and aller-
gies from seven countries who at-
tended the International Symposi
um on Allergy and Rehabilitation .
of Asthmatic Patients, in Israel.
The entire project for the treat-1
ment of children and adults from
Israel and abroad, it was reported,
will be developed by an Israeli I
public company, based on suc-
cessful experience in relieving
asthma victims who have lived in I
Arad during the past few years. I
An inspection trip to the Arad
site was a climax to the three-day
symposium, in which 25 papers on
the cure and prevention of asthma
were delivered.
The new center will include a
hospital, laboratory and research
units, outpatient clinic, several
hundred private homes and motels,
as well as the sanitorium, in order
to accommodate asthmatic patients
on a temporary and long-term
basis. and conduct research into
the ailment, its causes and treat-'

ment.

The project is sponsored by the
League far Asthmatic Patients.
Arad. which includes the partici-
pation of public figures and lead-
ing physicians in Israel. The league
is working in cooperation with an
international .medic a I advisory
committee, whose co-chairmen arc
Dr. I. Leonard Bernstein of Cin-
cinnati and Dr. Friedlaender.
A large section of Arad has be , n
made available by the city's mu-
nicipal council to build the center.
The Mazor Marpeh Arad company
will invest in the construction and
operation of sanitorium and resi-
dential facilities, while donations
and grants are being sought for
the creation of research and hos-
pital installations.
Dr. Nlenahe,n Frank of Beilinson
.Hospital, Petah Tikva, pointed out
to international allergy authorities
that Arad's experience has shown
that 75-80 per cent of asthma suf-
ferers who lived in Arad up to two
years were fully cured.
Similar results have been achiev_
ed, he observed, in a 40 - bed chil-
dren's home for young asthmatic
patients which has been operated
by the Mazor company the past
three years in Arad.
In the children's home, youngs-
ters from 8 to 18 are accommo-
dated for one to tivo-year periods.
In some cases, their families de-
cided to permanfttly settle in
Arad.
Minister of Health Victor Shem-
Toy, told the symposium. delegates
that approximately 2 per cent of

the Israeli population suffers from
the ailment in various forms, about
one third of these children.
Arad's remarkable success as a
site of an asthma resort, accord.
ing to the Israeli expert, is due to
dry climate, low humidity and
drastic temperature contrasts be-
between day and night, which are
