Side ONTARIO, Calif.—Anzia Yeziers- ka, whose stories about immigrant life on New York's Lower East Side were highly praised in the 1920s, died here Sunday at age 90. Miss Yezierska, a native of Pinsk in Russian Poland, was brought to New York as a child, and her early years there formed the background of many of her stories and novels. Miss Yezierska told about her life and the poverty on Hester St. in a fictionalized autobiography, "Red Ribbon on a White Horse" (1950). Self-educated, she used part of her sweatshop wages to pay the janitor's daughter for the privi- lege of reading ber school books. In 1920, the first of Miss Yezi- erska's seven books, "Hungry Hearts," was sold to become a silent movie. In Hollywood, she was unhappy among those in search of fame and fortune, so she left her job as a scenario writer and returned to New York. The Depression wiped out her financial security. Miss Yezierska then served on the Writers Project of the Works Project Administration. She wrote many book reviews for the New York Times and continued to write short stories and articles until shortly before her death.
