science teacher.
Chaplain James Mark Lebeau,
born in Akron. is at Camp
Pendelton, the Marine Corps base
in Southern California. He attend-
ed the Jewish Theological Sem-
inary. His parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Leo Lebeau, live in Akron. His
wife is the former Marcia Ceil
Greenman of Buffalo. N.Y. The
Lebeaus have two children.
At the chaplaincy school is Lt.
James Lewis Apple, the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Milton Apple of Hazle-
ton, Pa., where he was born. He
was graduated from the Jewish
Institute of Religion in 1965. His
wife is the former Judith
Schwartzman of Cincinnati. They
also have two children.
Chaplain Kenneth J. Weiss, of
Los Angeles, and his wife, Mrs.
Sue Weiss, are at the Naval Air
Station at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
He entered on active duty in 1968
after attending Hebrew Union Col-
lege and the Jewish Institute of
Religion.
Chaplain Stephen David Frank-
lin, of Cincinnati, is at the Naval
Air Station in Jacksonville, Fla.
He began active duty in 1969 after
rabbinical studies in Jerusalem,
Hebrew Union College and the
Jewish Institute of Religion.
Chaplain Daniel Alan Roberts,
born in Plainsville. O., is at the
Naval Training Center in San
Diego, Calif. His wife is the for-
mer Phyllis Goodman of Warren,

0. He was graduated from Heb-
rew Union College in 1969 and
joined the service.
Chaplain Bernard Frankel, of
Bountiful, Utah, began active duty
last year. He is with the fleet in
Yokusuka, Japan. Before joining
the Navy he served a congrega-
tion in Salt Lake City. He was
graduated in 1963 from the Jew-
ish Institute of Religion.
This report cannot close with-
out recalling that Lt. Frankel is
the promulgator of the "Jewish
ship" — the USS Bronstein. It
is a destroyer escort and the
second U.S. Navy ship to bear
the name of Ben Richard Bron-
stein, a lieutenant, junior grade,
who died in action on board the
USS Jacob Jones In World War
II. The first Bronstein was com-
missioned in 1943 and, after
serving with distinction for the
remainder of that war, was
presented in 1952 to Uruguay.
No more than a few Jews have
ever served on board the Bron-
stein but nevertheless it has be-
come known as the "Jewish ship."
Yellow mogen davids decorate
its torpedo tubes. The ship's audio
system plays the melody "Hava
Nagila" when the Br onstein
comes alongside another vessel.
The ship's crew proudly calls It
the "Kosher Cruiser," and since
the ship's movements have been
long and varied the crew calls
itself "the wandering Israelites."

Our Navy's chaplains corps
marks its 195th anniversary Nov.
28. To broaden public knowledge
of the observance, the Navy has
issued a comprehensive news kit
that reflects steady hands are at
the tillers to help keep the three
major religions in the United
States democratically proud of the
Navy's chaplaincy.

kit shows an opened ark with

Of these, eight are Jewish,
about 280 are Roman Catholic,
four are Eastern Orthodox and the
remainder are Protestant.
