Israel's Great Auto Race — Wasn't
ASHKELON — Beset first by
angry Orthodox who threatened
violent demonstrations if it' were
held on Saturday, Israel's first in-
ternational auto race was aban-
doned Sunday because the spec-
tators turned into what a West
German racing official called "the
most uncivilized, undisciplined mob
scene I have ever seen in my life."
Police ordered the races, involv-
ing 35 drivers from 11 countries,
canceled when hundreds of view-
ers swarmed on the track after
the first race and ignored repeated
appeals over the public address
system to move.

The promoters, a private com-
pany including Israeli and West
German interests, were to be com-
pensated financially for part of
their losses arising out of the post-
ponement. Sunday is a work day
in Israel, and attendance was
likely to be smaller than on a rest
day.
Compensation was to be in the
amount of nearly $60,000, appar-
ently raised in Orthodox quarters.
The deal was widely criticized
in Israel as a "payoff," negotiated
by Mayor Oved Ben Ami of Na-
tanya, who offered his services as
mediator to his colleague, Mayor
Rahavia Adivi of Ashkelon.

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The Gov-
ernment-Jewish Agency Coordinat-
ing Board have approved the
agreement recently concluded be-
tween the World Zionist Federa-
tion and the ministry of education
and culture on cooperation in the
propagation of Jewish education in
the diaspora.
The principal benefit of the
agreement is that the difficult job
of recruiting Judaica teachers for
Jewish schools outside Israel will
be taken over by the ministry. A
special section to be called the
Center for Jewish Education in the
diaspora will be set up for this
purpose.
One of the major difficulties in
the recruitment of Israeli teachers
for service abroad is that they
stand to lose their seiority rights
and other social benefits if they
stay away for long periods.
Under the new agreement, the
ministry of education promises to
see to it that Israeli teachers who
return home after a lengthy period
of expatriation do not become
worse off financially than those of
their colleagues who stayed at
home.

MONSEY, N.Y. (JTA) — A Jew-
ish author and lecturer delivered
a message recently to the New
York Metropolitan Region of the
United Synagogue of America
"that most Jews in this country
are more Jewishly committed than
the establishment has led us to
believe."
Dr. Trude Weiss-Rosmarin, edi-
tor of the Jewish Spectator, ob-
served that while "we are being
told that American Jewish youth
is disaffected and alienated,"
many young people "say they be-
lieve in Jewish continuity and sur-
vival."
Dr. Weiss-Rosmarin said there
was a definite trend toward the
desire for Jewish education and
survival among young Jews but de-
plored what she termed the kin-
dergarten type of Jewish educa-
tion practiced by "the vast major-
ity of Jewish parents."
This type of education, she
noted, deprives Jewish youth from
knowing "the intellectual essence
and ahead-of-our-time modernity
of Judaism."
Rabbi Jules Harlow, director of
publications, Rabbinical Assembly,
scored special rock services for
teenagers offered in a number of
congregations throughout the coun-
try.
