Potpourri — About Jews And Their Ideals By DAVID SCHWARTZ (Copyright 1570, JTA, Inc.) NEW YORK—Former N.Y. Po- lice Inspector Sanford Garelick was recently in Israel and speak- ing in Netanya asked his audience what America could send them. "A half million Jews," someone called out. Funny people, the Israelis! Other people want Cadillacs or color tele- vision sets, but give them just plenty of Jews and they are satis- fied. This is all the more strange when we consider the current philosophies. The Calvinists of a century or two ago held that man was vile and fit only for damna- tion. Only an elect few were to be saved from hell-fire. The world today has adopted a kind of secu- lar Calvinism which implies that a great 'part of the population could be dispensed with. One al- most wishes to apologize for being born. This is not the Jewish view. The Bible says man is made in the image of God. What higher com- pliment can a man have than that? It is enough to make every- one walk with shoulders erect. The Real Problem Lindberg flew across the ocean. That makes him an authority on all subjects. In his newly published book, he says the defeat of the Nazis was a great blow to the world and posterity. Hitler, he says, had a difficult Jewish problem. How difficult was it really? In all, there were only half a million Jews in Germany. They were a very assimilated group. The rate of intermarriage was extraordinarily high. The German and Austrian Jews produced such men as Einstein and Sigmund Freud, the two immortals of that era. Lindberg is a flyer and he must know of the Lilienthals of Germany, two Jewish brothers, Otto and Gustave Lilienthal, who were the first actually to fly. One of them was killed in a flight. The German aeronautical society is still called today the Lilienthal society. The Wright brothers were inspired by the example of the Lilienthals. Israel believes men are not only equal but wonderful. Every man is worthy but he must be in his right place to exert his full worth. If you put Einstein in a bakery, be would obviously not be worth as much as in the science laboratory. If there is no job for a workingman, it does not prove the laborer is worthless, but that he has not found his place. The worth of a man is determined not only by what he is but where he is. A half million Jews anywhere in the world have their worth, but in Israel, we may say their worth doubies. Many grope to find their right place. One of the recent newcomers to Israel is a niece of Captain Dreyfus, the French officer who was charged with betraying France to the Germans. A young newspaper reporter, Theodor Herzl, who attended the trial, was so distressed by its reve- lation of the depths of anti-Semi- tism in France, that he wrote "Das Judenstaat" and founded the Zion- ist movement. Many were converted to Zionism by Herzl's book, but one family which was not—was the Dreyfus family itself. About a year ago, however, this niece of Captain Dreyfus announced she was leaving France. She was going to settle in America. Some- one suggested that she visit Israel. She decided to take the trip, but she had no special interest in Is- rael. She would just look and then move, on. But after a little while in a kibutz, she wrote a letter: "Dear Mama: This is the place Torah Scroll Gift of Svna ,rocrue to Black Congregants PHILADELPHIA (JTA) — The gift of a Torah scroll by this city's largest Conservative synagogue, liar Zion Temple, to the city's only black Jewish congregation, Adath Emeth Israel, was hailed as an "act of brotherhood" by Clarence Farmer, chairman of the Philadelphia Commission on Hu- man Relations. Writing to Rudolph Windsor, leader of Adath Emeth Israel, on behalf of the commissioners and staff of the human relations com- mission, Farmer stated: "When two groups with so many diffe- rences choose to recognize their common bonds, they remind all of us that it is better to live together in peace, sharing a world of har- mony and mutual respect." The presentation of the Torah Scroll culminated friendly over- tures between the two congrega- tions over a period of several months. its traditional The Torah, maroon velvet sheath, was rev- ently placed in the Ark on Adath Emeth Israel's pulpit while mem- bers of both congregations joined in prayer. The ceremony celebrat- ed the recent acquisition of a syna- gogue building for the blackcon- gregation which previously had been housed in rented temporary quarters. The new building, which will be the home for a sizeable num- ber of black people residing in where your 'eying daughter in- tends to remain." Now the rest of the Dreyfus family is pack- ing up for the same destination. Some people are converted by a book, others by a look. o o o Rockefellers and Rothschilds According to a story in the New Perhaps the Jews of Germany were too good. If a way could have been found to make the German Jews more dumb, perhaps the German disaster might have been averted. Or maybe the real prob- lem of Germany was that it had too many people with Lindberg's ideas of Teutonic superiority. York Times, Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, in his recent cam- paign, addressing some Jewish voters, hinted that some of his fore- bears were Jewish. We are surprised, we did not guess as much. Rock is of course a translation of Stein or Stone. - The Rockefeller family were origi- nally Steins, no doubt. The only Jewish family corre- sponding to the Rockefellers are the Rothschilds, but only one of the long line of Rothschilds ran for public office. Many of them how- ever have turned to other fields, particularly science. The present Lord Rothschild is a scientist and many of the Rothschilds have gone away from finance to other fields. If one has Rothschild or Rocke- feller millions perhaps he has to run for Governor or become a scientist. If anyone tried to give us • a hundred million dollars, we would say, "Go away, we have enough Friday, November 27, 1970-19 aeq,040p 4a0, POTTER MOVING & STORAGE CO. PRIME AND CHOICE MEATS .
