30 YEARS YIVO: Thirty years of existence of the YIVO In-
stitute for Jewish Research in the United States-now being cele-
brated-represent a great cultural achievement for American Jewry.
They are years of great prestige for Jews among American scholars
in this country.
When YIVO moved from Europe to the United States 30 years
ago, it had already been in existence for 15 years in Vilna, Poland.
It was fortunate to have the valuable archive of this great institution
of Jewish research rescued in time from the Nazis. The archives found
their way to the United States soon after the outbreak of World War
II. There were few in the American academic world at that time who
knew the VIVO. Today, YIVO is an institution of great scholarly re-
pute among professors and students in numerous American universi-
ties. It rates high among American research libraries. It has 300,000
volumes in 15 languages-the largest collection of books on Jews and
Jewish heritage-in its library, and 2,000,000 important documents on
Jewish past and present in its archives.
What the British Museum in London is to men and women doing
research on history and culture in general, the YIVO is to American
academicians-Jews and non-Jews-conducting research on Jewish
history, literature, sociology and other aspects of Jewish life. It is a
source of material to young American Jewish students who seek more
knowledge about matters Jewish and about Jewish cultural heritage.
More than 100 works on Jewish subjects are being written in English
every year in this country, and their authors depend on the research
they are doing in the YIVO library and archives. This is especially
true with regard to students who write dissertations on Jewish sub-
jects for their doctorate degrees.
