Heschel to GetHeritageAward Bnai Brith Cites NEW YORK — Dr. Abraham Joshua Heschel, a foremost Jewish scholar, was named recipient of Bnai Brith's 1971 Jewish Heritage Award for "excellence in Jewish literature." The $1,000 literary prize, estab- lished in 1966 by Bnai Brith's com- mission on'adult Jewish education, is given annually to a writer who, in his total works, "makes a posi- tive contribution to contemporary literature by his authentic inter- pretation of Jewish life and values." Presentation will be made to Dr. Heschel at an awards luncheon during the Bnai Brith commis- sion's annual meeting, Feb. 21, in New York. A scholar of extraordinary range, Dr. Heschel is professor of Jewish ethics and mysticism at the Jew- ish Theological Seminary of Amer- ica and author of major works on Jewish history, philosophy, mysti- cism and religion. Outstanding among them is a two-part opus, "Man Is Not Alone" and "God in Search of Man," on fundamental problems of religion as they arise for modern man. At the same time, it was recalled in Zionist ranks that Bounin was a member of the Jewish Legion which fought in 1917-18 in Palestine for the liberation of the Holy Land and of Jerusalem, under General Allenby. Born and reared in London, Bounin started singing in the syna- gigue at age B. He began train- ing for opera at 16 and studied at the conservatory in Naples. Urged by an operatic artist, Bounin, who already had sung the roles of Rigoletto and Germont, came to the U.S. in 1914. He was granted an audition, but the Met impresario did not want a young. English singer. It was the day of the established European artist. Bounin sang with the San Carlo Opera and on the concert stage, but when the U.S. entered the First World War, Bounin joined the Jewish Legion in late 1917. He served with the 39th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. in the Egyptian Expeditionary Forces under Gen- eral Allenby. After the armistice in 1918, Bon- nie helped organize a concert party which traveled throughout Egypt, Palestine. Syria and Lebanon, per- forming for the British and French troops. Upon return to the U.S. in 1920, Bounin taught singing in Toledo, and gave concerts. He entered the automotive industry in Toledo and advanced through the years to the position of purchasing director. Bounin came to ,i,ecroit m 1939 and worked with several com- panies through 1941-1946. He en- tered the insurance business and is still active. Kusworm Award, highest citation given a Bnai Brith group for com- munity or veterans work. County Chapter was selected from among more than 2,500 Bnai Brith and BBW units in North America.
