A new eight-bed coronary care
unit which will provide optimum
care for acute-phase heart patients
will open in December at Sinai
Hospital.
Construction of the unit, which
will replace the existing four-bed
unit, was made possible by an un-
disclosed gift from Mr. and Mrs.
Isadore W. Winkelman, who have
been associated with the hospital
since its founding.
Winkelman, chairman of the
board of Winkelman Stores, Inc.,
is a longtime member of the hos-
pital's board of trustees. Mrs.
Winkelman Is immediate past pre-
sident of the Sinai Women's Guild.
The unit will provide round-
the-clock electronic monitoring
of heart patients, as well as an
alarm system that will enable
medical personnel to react im-
mediately to changes in vital
signs, said Dr. Julien Priver,
Sinai's executive vice president.
Each room will be equipped
with piped-in oxygen and suction,
a wall-mounted electrocardiogra-
phic display and EKG printout,
and electronic blood pressure
equipment.
A synchronized defibrillator at
the patient's bed will automatically
correct heart rate changes and
other erratic symptoms as they
occur.
A specially-designed portable
fluroscopic machine will allow
cardiac pacemakers to be installed
in either the patient's room or in
a special urocedure room adjacent
to the unit.
An on-call room equipped with
monitors and house staff sleeping
facilities will provide 24-hour cov-
erage by a cardiology resident.
The room will contain a two-chan-
nel monitor and EKG print-out as
well as an alarm system.
In addition to the eight beds, the
unit will provide a two-bed heart
surgery study area for post-opera-
tive open heart patients undergo-
ing the "balloon pump" procedure
developed by Dr. Adrian Kantro-
witz, Sinai's director of surgery.
The "balloon pump" provides tem-
porary assistance to the heart fol-
lowing a severe attack.
, Dr. Kantrowitz, along with Dr.
'Melvyn Rubenfire, chief of car-
diology will direct the operation
of the new unit.
"The gift from Mr. and Mrs.
Winkelman will enable us to pro-
vide the best care possible for
cardiac patients," said Dr. Priver.
"We are most appreciative of
their generous assistance."
