Manila Tree Planting
Held in Honor of Israel

MANILA — The city of Manila,
capital of the Philippine Islands, is
establishing a grove in honor of the
state of Israel. The Saplings, which
were sent from the Jerusalem hills
by the Jewish National Fund head
office, will- be planted near the
city's museum, currently under
construction.
Dedicating the grove at a cere-
mony attended by hundreds of
gusets, the mayor of Manila said
the trees symbolize the long-stand-
ing friendstip between the two
countries and promised that a sec-
tion of the museum would be de-
voted to Israel.
The Israeli ambassador brought
greetings in the name of his gov-
ernment.

Israeli Star on Broadway

By GEORGE FRIEDMAN

(Copyright 1970, JTA, Inc.)

Broadway has its first Israeli
star. He is Gideon Singer, who on
Sept. 18 took over the lead role(s)
in the long-running, award-winning
musical "Man of la Mancha" at
the Martin Beck Theater. The fifth
in the show's current "international
star" series, he is scheduled to
portray Miguel de Cervantes Saa-
vedra and Don Quixote de la
Mancha for 10 weeks, excluding
matinees. His performance is well
worth a visit, especially by those
interested in seeing and hearing
how an Israeli Jewish ex-violinist
impersonates an excommunicated
Spanish Catholic writer and the
demented Spanish knight-errant of
his imagination.
Singer is expert in all the facets
of the two intertwined characters,
alternately pensive, brash, disrup-
tive, poignant ,and, of course,
quixotic. His don's death scene with
the splendid Gaylea Byrne as Al-
donza Dulcinea is a most moving
theatrical experience.

Singer starred in the Tel Aviv
production of "Man of la Man-
cha," which ran only a month
after being interrupted by the
Six-Day War but has been pre-
served on an imported CBS disc.
He has also essayed the show in
German in Germany and Switzer-
land. It took him three months to
learn the English lines for Broad-
way, he said, before a recent
performance. But it has paid off.
Not only does be handle the
lines skilfully on stage, but he
has received what must be con-
sidered the ultimate compliment:
On his dressing room mirror is
a message daubed by Jack Dab-
doub, the New Orleans-born actor
who heads the cast Wednesday
and Saturday afternoons. It
reads: "Gideon, you were great—

In that country to discuss re-
conciliation with Polish officials,
Scheel was visibly moved as he
wrote in the memorial book fol-
lowing his tour of the camp: "In
the face of these horrors, this
inhumanity, it must be our task
to preserve these highest values:
the dignity of man and peace be-
tween nations."
Scheel also became the highest

German official to visit Poland
since the end of World War II. The
minister, who is usually smiling
and ebullient, was silent and grim-
faced as he was shown the Ausch-
witz crematoria and museum. His
visit was covered by German tele-
vision. .
In West Berlin, the 32nd anniver-
sary of the mass destruction of
German Jewish property on "Crys-
tal Night" was marked by Lord
Mayor Karl Schuetz, who visited
the Jewish community building,
laid a wreath and said no one must
forget that event.

worked at diamond polishing.
Wounded while fighting with the
Palmach in 1948, he entertained
his fellow patients and determined
on a theatrical career. Among the
starring roles he has played in
verious capitals have been Captain
Hook in "Peter Pan," Murray
Burns in "A Thousand Clowns,"
Oscar Madison in "The Odd Cou-
ple," Don Pedro in "Much Ado
About Nothing" and Chuck Baxter
in "Promises, Promises." He has
entertained in the Catskills and at
New York's Cafe Sahbra. The
father of four—including Yoel, a
20-year-old Israeli soldier, and
Berenike (Veronica), a 17-year-old
soon-to-be-Israeli-soldier — says he
prefers to play comedy. Asked if
"Man of Is Mancha" has substan-
tial comedy, he replies: "When I
play it it does."
The actor concedes that Don
Quixote is not as much of a lands-
man to Jews as is, say, Tevye in
"Fiddler on the Roof." That, he
says, is why "Man of la Mancha,"
which has been produced in 21
cities so far, ran only 149 per-
formances in Tel Aviv. But he be-
lieves that in New York—where
half or more of the theatergoers
are Jewish—many Jews are at-
tending his shows. He says he can
sense it at a certain point in the
evening. It comes after his curtain
calls, when he thanks the audience
in Hebrew ("Todah, todah rabah")
and offers, as an encore, "a song

lom Habilti-efshari," which is "The
Impossible Dream' in Hebrew. To
which one can only respond with
"Heidad!," which is "Hurrah!"
